does this sound like seizures kati is 13 yrs old and quite a few yrs ago she had a couple of episodes that i considered seizures.like stiffening of her body..now she seems to be shivering like she is cold..is this a type of seizure also? I had her bto the vet a week ago for loose bloody stools and just mentioned this other shivering but she didn't seem very concerned...does anyone have any input on this? |
Shivering can be a sign of pain and also of low blood sugar. What did your vet do for the bloody stools? If she did nothing I would see another vet. At 13 Kati's appetite might be changing. Make sure she eats enough, give her treats or break her meals into several small meals each day instead of just one or two and that may help if it's low blood sugar. You might keep some Nutrical on hand in case you need it though. Also, free feeding, if you don't already, may be an option for her. Here is a great site full of information on seizures that might be helpful to you: Canine epilepsy and diseases that cause seizures in dogs Good luck...I hope Kati is doing better. |
my demi had a petit mal seizure from rosemary in chicken one time and the difference in a petit mal and a grand mal is a petit they lay on side and go stiff and a grand mal they shake and convulse. The grand mal is worse. My demi after petit mal was nervous and afraid to walk and just sat there shaking as if cold and scared :( broke my heart. I agree see another vet -- was blood work done to see what is happening if anything? |
Lady has been epileptic for nine years so I am all too familiar with seizures. What you describe doesn't sound like seizures. When was the last time Kati had a geriatric profile (complete bloodwork, thyroid panel)? Seniors should have one done every year. That might shed some light on the shivering. |
you know what that is good thinking as hypothyroidism can cause them to be cold as my dd is hypothyroid so make sure they have a full 6 panel thyroid add on --I bet you it is hypothyroidism as they tend to get that at an older age usually --get this done asap as hypothyroid they can have seizures from this as well. We work with dr jean dodds who is excellent with this and she is at Animal Blood Bank and Restore Health Cente and she could analyze results for you -- most important is a yorkie should be t4free 1.0 if less than that then hypothyroid. My dd was .30 before meds and now .92 -- it is an easy fix :) |
