Information on Heart problems!!! Help! My little Emma is 17 months old and I have been looking everywhere for information on heart problems or heart disease in yorkies! She has gone a few months without her heart guard because one vet told me dogs didn't have to take it every month! Now I am worried about it because I was reading on here that sometimes when yorkies have a coughing or choking problem it can be due to an enlarged heart! She has been sneezing and "choking for a few days now quite often and now my little maltese is also starting to sneeze! But they have not been around any other dogs and have both been vaccinated against kennel cough! I'm just concerned, I need help! I need more info and please someone tell me more about what to do about heart guard medication! Thanks |
If she hasnt been on heartworm medication she needs to be checked for heartworms before you give her the heartworm med. It is dangerous maybe even deadly so to give the heartworm meds if they already have heartworm. Im surprised your vet would tell you to go off of it |
Heartgard has a grace period of 15 days. If you are more than 15 days late, she should be tested for heartworms. Coughing can be a symptom of heartworms and I would be concerned since she was off the med but since the Maltese is sneezing, I would guess they both just have a bug. Have they seen the vet? |
Do you know how they test for heartworms? and what are the symptoms? I was going to a vet where I used to live a few hours from where I just moved and they were unsure of the amount or type of medicine to give my small yorkie (under 3 lbs full grown) and he said that it really was not necessary to give it to such a small dog. OBVIOUSLY THEY WERE WRONG! I should have got a second opinion somewhere else but we were so busy with moving I never did! :( |

It is just a blood test. I would personally get it done siince she has been off for so long. The size of the dog doesn't matter. If you have heartworms in your area, most vets would tell you to medicate. Interceptor is okay. They have a dose for dogs 2-10 pounds. Revolution has a dose for small animals but the heartworm protection from it is questionable and I personally don't like it at all. |
Heart worms When i had Julz as a puppy i gave her Heartguard for the first few years, she has not had it in the last 8-10 yrs and her Dr. told me since she was basically an inside dog that she would be fine. When i was yonger we never gave heartworm med's to our dogs and they were okay without it. I don't know if where you live has anythign to do with it but i am in FL. My fingers are crossed that all works out for you and you pups:aimeeyork. |

I just lost my 19 yr. old Pom and we had dealth with congestive heart failure for the last 8 months. I recommend a vet of course but if its any concellation-I do not recall him sneezing at all. In fact the coughing he did was not even really a cough more of a gasping noise with a hacking sound. With the sneezing I am more prone to say allergy and possibly the drainage in the throat causing the cough..... |

if they both had the vacine reasonly yes they can get kennel. They can get kennel cough just from going to vet, playyard ,groomer. It is a live virus they are putting into them.Ther are 23 stranges and the vacine is for thee.It like getting flu shot and going to themall. You may still get it just not as bad.As for a heart problem how does the heart sound. |
