coughing My lil boy has been coughing for the past month...I took him to the pet store I bought him....They gave me medicine...They said since he is eating and playing normally he should be okay....They gave me medicine, but its been a month now...I go once a week for medicine, but they say he will be okay...What do you guys think? how long does coughing last.... if he is playing n eating okay???please help me out |
Take your little fellow to a Vet without any further delay ..... the people at the Pet Store are NOT veterinarians and know little to nothing about pet health. Your little dog may have kennel cough and should be treated as soon as possible. Has your puppy even had its shots? Has it been checked by a Vet at all? Puppys need to be checked. |
This happened to my Yorki too. When I brought her home (at 9 weeks) she was coughing for weeks , so much she would wake me up at night and I would be scared she will suffocate. I went to the vet 3 times and they said it was all good since she was eating and playing. The 4 th time I saw a great vet and he told me that there is just two things to do - give her antibiotics and wait or put her under anaesthetic and check in her throat , risking her dying , since Yorks are very sensitive to anaesthetic and one risk their life every time. So I gave her antibiotics, it didnt really help. She kept coughing. Then I moved. Used to live in the very center of London - which mean the pollution was terrible and went to Sweden where the air is very clean. A week later her cough was all gone and never came back. I do think it had something to do with it. I have very sensitive throat and airways and I would feel the pollution in London irritating my throat and airways as well. Hope it can help |

but who checked your puppy stinkygummybear?? ..... the pet shop people who you bought him from?? ..... or an actual qualified vet? ...... a vet at a location (Veterinary Clinic) different from where you bought your puppy?? Coughing for a full month is not normal nor okay for your puppy ..... it just sounds like there is something wrong and if you want to be kind and look after your puppy well .... you should seek help from a properly trained and qualified vet. |
The vet on the first day i brought him home....I followed your advize I took him to the vet...They will do x-ray on him to check if he is okay....I will pick him up in 1 hour and they will tell me what he has....I hope he is okay and not a genetic disorder or anything like that or that collapse thing..... You did very well stinkygummybear:) .... at least now, having a proper vet check your puppy you will know whether or not you have anything to be worried about. I do hope, as well, that your puppy is not suffering from a collapsed trachea. Do you walk him with a collar and leash or a harness and leash? With these very small breeds you are really better to use a harness on them. They will sometimes pull hard and if they are wearing a collar only, this can cause throat problems for them - wearing a harness allows them to be restrained around their whole body and not just the neck and then, when they pull, the pressure is on the whole body not just their neck. Let us know what the vet says ....... good luck with your puppy :) |
I really hope so...but the vet did not say that Quote:

Yeah i do the harness.... Ty for the tip.. No it is not trachea...she said that in this xray it looks good....but she did say to take in the lil guy in 5 days for a follow up......the only thing she did say was that his heart is suppose to be in 3 bones or something and its almost at 4 bones...his heart is a lil bit to big for him since he is only 3.2 pounds..... I hope he gets better, because if he doesnt she said it could be a heart diseases or something more serious.... Does anyone have pet insured....i think i will get it at petco.... Quote:

THANKS for keeping us up dated stinkygummybear ....... do you think you'll be able to buy pet insurance now its been discovered there may be something wrong with your puppy? The vet might have to do a complete health check and work up before they'll sell you the insurance. You said you bought this puppy at a pet store ...... you know there is a good possibility this puppy is from a puppy-mill or back-yard breeder so it could very well have health issues. I know you love your puppy very much and will do everything you can to give it a good life and keep it healthy and happy. Let us know what the vet says in 5 days. |
glad to hear that he is getting better and you have gone to a different vet! |
I have seen kennel cough last for 4-6 weeks and it often took more then 2 different kinds of antibiotics and cough suppressents. The vet should have been able to hear if the lungs were clear. This dog is only 6 months old? maybe there is a heart defect? Does the dog have difficulty breathing. Or has stopped being as active as it had been because it maybe getting short of breath? Does the gums get bluish in color? If you see an enlarged heart ? investiage to rule out congestive heart failure? Is the dog urinating alright? |
i sure will....all you guys scared me....but hoe his heart is okay...we will see on saturday when i do the follow up....ty 4 everthing Quote:

Well I dont think she mention anything about the gummy bears lungs...I really hope its not a heart defect...She did say that from the x ray his heart was in 4 bones and its suppose to be in 3...So his heart is a lil bit too big....NO he is breathing okay and he is still active....His urine seems normal too me..... do i google that congestive heart failure Quote:
