anyone have experience with cherry eye I found out Aurora has cherry eye. I was freaked out when it first appeared. I didn't know if she got something in her eye or ran into something. She went to the vet and he gave her steriods to try. The drops didn't help. He suggested surgery may be an option. Both eyes have it. I had someone tell me that their dog had the surgery many times and it kept coming back. Is that common? I don't want to subject her to surgery numerous times. She doesn't rub her eyes or act like they hurt her, but not sure if they really do bother her? Basically just wondering if anyone else had experience with this and if so what treatments helped. Is it something that will affect her if I don't have the surgery? Can the side effects of surgery be worse than the cherry eye? Sorry just wanting to hear from others, before I just rush her off to have surgery. |
My sister-in-law's maltese mix had cherry eye when he was younger, but he had the surgery. It has never come back (he is about 4 now) and has not had any other eye problems since then. From what I recall, the cost of surgery was not outrageous. |
I am familiar with cherry eye. I had a bull dog and a Yorkie with it. It will not go away without the surgery. It is a simple surgery and quick recovery. Sometimes they will always have a dry eye in that eye and you will need to put drops in a couple times per day. |
ok glad to hear others had good experiences with the surgery. The thought of surgery concerned me when someone else said it didn't work. They said they had it done like 3 times. I have no issue with her having a surgery IF its going to really help her. I just didn't want to have her have multiple surgeries without sucess. |
Lady had a cherry eye when I adopted her. My vet fixed it during her dental. That was nine years ago and she hasn't had a problem since. Here is a good explanation of cherry eye for you: Cherry Eye Surgery... Third Eyelid Eversion In A Dog in ThePetCenter.com. Cherry Eye (Prolapsed Gland of the third eyelid) |
thank you so much for the links |
My sisters cocker had it and had surgery on both her eyes. She never had a problem again and it's been 3 years. |
you are all making me feel so much better about the surgery. I just got worried when told about the one person's experience. I am going to talk to my vet and if he doesn't do the surgery, I will see who he suggests. Then do some research and such. |
Pippin had surgery in one eye two months ago. He's 15 months old. It took a couple of weeks for it to heal. My vet charged $300 for the surgery. I am happy I decided to get it done. |
she will need it for both eyes. Glad to know its not that expensive and that healing time will not be that long. Again I am feeling so much better about the surgery now that I have heard from people here. |
