2 1/2 Year Old Yorkie With Arthritus I posted this last night in the health category. Our 2 1/2 year old yorkie/s**tzu has osteo- arthritis in her left front shoulder and arthritis in her right rear hip. The front leg is ok but the problem is her rear leg. It is so sad to see her not able to walk. It gets so bad she can't even bear weight on it. She is currently on Cosequin Capsules (glucosamine and chondroitin) 500mg/day and 25mg /day of Deramaxx. She had tried Metacam but it caused blood in her stool. She weighs about 17 lbs. Do you know of anything else that will work prescription or otherwise. The vet says the Deramaxx is the best one for her but I don't think so. Any help will be greatly appreciated by both myself and Molly :aimeeyork...thanks. Cheers Mike |
I found this mentioned in a confimation of a order i placed on Healthypets.com: Colder weather is here. Studies have linked colder weather to increased amounts of pain and stiffness in arthritis sufferers. It is of great importance to continue giving pets joint supplements like Joint MAX year-round to treat and prevent arthritic and other joint conditions. Give your pet an additional boost in their fight against arthritis by rewarding them with Joint Treats. Good luck with your baby! |
Aw, I'm so sorry to hear of your baby hurting like this :(. I don't know a whole lot about arthritis, but I was going to suggest Cosequin - and you're already using it. There are a lot of things they use in humans, so many more options it seems - did the vet offer nothing else? I wonder if there is a specialist you could consult with. What did the vet say about it showing up so early? |
Have her hips been x-rayed? Her hips may be bad enough to qualify for a Femoral Head Ostectomy, which is the removal of the femoral "ball" that fits into the socket. its not as bad as it sounds. very common. i'd have it checked out. |
Arthritis at such a young age. :-( Good thing you are trying Cosequin. Just make sure you look out for the side effects of Deramaxx. My dog was not so lucky with a NSAID called Rimadyl. I Killed My Dog | The Dog Arthritis Resource Geng |
