Soft spots?? Hi guys! I know this is a yorkie talk, but i just got a little sister for Peanut, my yorkie. She is a Maltese, she is 1.8 lbs at 4 months old. She is tiny, and playful with Peanut, she follows him all over the house. :) wags her tail. Her appetite is not the best. I give her nutrical to supplement some food. When we go out for a walk, she walks without a leash and follows me and peanut with her tail wagging :) When i first saw her I had to get her, she was just not taking care of, she had so much gunk in her eyes, she was dirty, well I just wanted to take care of her. I took her to the vet, they said she was okay. I noticed that she doesnt come out of her shell with humans, only with other dogs.... but for the million dollar question....:confused::confused:I found another little hole in her head, under her left ear. It doesnt hurt her.... what could this be........ :( |
Its an open fontanel and its more common in tiny dogs. Im surprised the vet didnt notice it. It may close up or it may not. If not youll have to be careful that she doesnt hit her head in that area |
I think it's simply the shape of her skull. Is it literally a hole or an indention? Ears are cartilage and are only connected to their skulls by the skin. You just feel the indention beneath her ear. |
I think an open frontal refers to the top of their head...not beneath. That's the area where a baby's "soft" spot would be opened at birth and gradually close later on. |
well she has one a soft spot on top, but she also has a hole in the skull in where her left ear meets the skull close to the neck... |

Gently take her head on your hands....and feel both sides beneath her ears. Then compare Peanut's. The soft spot on top of her head would be an open frontal. You want to watch that...hopefully it will close but if not you really have to be careful that nothing hits it or presses against it...as she has no protection for her brain. |
I have compared Peanuts, and under her left ear, and yes it still feels like a whole about the tip of your pinky finger...:( |

There is lots of LS info here if you wanna review it. |
I didn't read any of the other replies yet, but my Tatum has an open fontanel. It's quite large and I was so scared that she was going to hit her head as that can be very serious and can even cause death if they hit on that spot. I asked my vet about it and he said to just watch her, that sometimes they close on their own and sometimes they never do. She still has it and she will be 2 years old at the end of next month. Tatum was "the runt" of the litter and this very often happens with the tiny ones, so I am assuming that this is why she has it. The hole you are referring to doesn't sound like an Open Fontanel to me though because of the location that it's in. I honestly have no idea what this could be  but I do hope she's ok! :( |
