Gellica is not feeling well She has been sick since Saturday night. She began her heat a couple of weeks ago (today is day 17) and she started bleeding again Saturday night after the bleeding had stopped awhile back. She also became very lethargic. All she wants to do is sleep, and she is normally very active. She wouldn't walk down the stairs, and her legs seemed a bit wobbly, like she didn't have full control over them. She didn't throw up, and she was eating/drinking/pottying normal, so we waited until our vet opened this morning to take her in. The vet said he "thought" it was a uterine infection since she is in heat, and said that the stress of the heat alone could cause this. He didn't do a blood test, just gave her some doxycycline (an antibiotic). How does he know what it is without doing a blood test? Yes, it does seem logical, but I would rather "know" what she has instead of "thinking" I know what she has. So, we gave her the first dosage this morning, and about an hour later she threw up just very little bit. Could the antibiotic be causing her upset stomach? Should I be giving it to her with food? The vet didn't say, I am just supposed to give her 1/2 tablet every 12 hours. Do you think she kept the first dosage down? Oh brother, as I am typing this, she just threw up again. Any input would be great, as we are worried about her, and the vets diagnosis. Thank you!! |
It could be a split heat but because of the amount of lethargy and wobbliness, it does sound like a uterine infection (pyometra). Occasionally vets try antibiotics but the best treatment is an emergency spay. If this is in fact what it is, it is a very serious situation (maybe the vet thinks this case is mild though...). If it were my dog and the vet thought that it was pyometra, I would talk to them about spaying her today. I might also get a second opinion. What to Do If Your Female Dog Has Pyometra (Uterine Infection) - Associated Content It seems far better to spay instead of hoping that antibiotics fix the problem only for it to possibly return. There is no way I can say if this is what she has. Is the discharge very red or is it more like pus? Blood work could be done but I think x-ray is a good thing to do. Maybe it is just a split heat but why is she wobbly then? Is her belly swollen? If you are questioning your vet, can you go (today) and get a second opinion. If they agree with the first vet's advice, then stick with it but now she is throwing up the meds, so something has to be done anyway. |
There is no discharge (except for a little blood like when she first started her heat). There is no foul smelling odor, and her belly is not swollen. If this is what she has, I believe we were lucky enough to catch it right away. Thank you for the links, I will read up on it, and keep her watching her closely. If there is no change, I will take her for a second opinion. |
I hope she is ok. I had Cali spayed during her heat due to a possible obstruction and she did fine, so if she does need to be spayed, just make sure the vet has experience spaying a dog in heat. Keep us posted. |
Well, here's a bit of an update. I ended up calling the vet back yesterday to ask if I should be giving her the meds with food, and he said yes, (thanks for telling me that beforehand) and he also said that this is probably what caused her to throw up yesterday morning. So, she ate some chicken & veggies last night, and took the antibiotic, and she kept it down just fine. BUT - we fed her again this morning, and gave her the pill, and she threw up about 20 minutes later. So, now we are not sure. Maybe she has a sensitive stomach and it was too early to feed her and give her a pill? She doesn't normally eat much in the AM. She does seem to be feeling a little bit better, and her legs seem stronger, but this throwing up is driving me crazy because she really needs these meds, and I'm worried that they are not getting into her fast enough. |
Since she threw up so close to taking her meds, we decided to wait a couple of hours, and try again because she obviously didn't absorb any the first time. So, this time we gave her a scrambled egg, and crushed up the pill (so maybe it would get into her system faster) - and this time, she has kept it down. We are going to do this from now on and hope this works!! |
