Wheezing or over excitement??? hallo everyone. well, my yorkie is now almost 2, and this has been going on pretty much his whole life, but lately its started to concern me.... when my husband comes home from work, my winston gets SOOO excited that he starts making this wheezing sound. We pick him up and calm him down until he's breathing fine again and then he's back to jumping around + being a spaz... :p most people have told me not to worry about it, but i wanted to run this by you fine people. is this something thats normal for such a little dog? Just getting over excited like that??? thanks much! |
I'm not sure but there are times when their treach(throat) closes and they can't catch air. This happens to Buddy sometimes and it's scary I know. I think it's pretty common in Yorkies. They have very delicate necks which is why harness's are suggested instead of a collar on the neck. I would mention it to the vet if it only happens every so often. If it begins to happen more often call your vet. I don't think it is anything to really worry about. |
Well....do you think it's "wheezing" or a little bout of reverse sneezing that he gets into? Because those are 2 very different things. If it's actual wheezing - caused within the LUNGS, it really needs to be checked out so the reason can be determined. If it's reverse sneezing, then you're doing what I'd do too - help him get out of the cycle. :) |
hmmm i'd say its problably more reverse sneezing... he just sounds like he's trying to catch his breathe or maybe something stuck in his throat. Little short bursts of funny noises.. he tenses up and he tries to catch his breathe as we talk him out of it... soounds like a snorting actually... |

Ann, thank you for that suggestion. I usually rub Bud's chest and back. I knew what she was talking about because it happen's to Bud when he get's over excited. Never thought about the licking part, I will certainly try that when it happens again. Not often but it has happened. |
ah okay. haha. yeah I usually give HIM kisses and rub his neck and tell him to breathe :p okay.. well I just wanted to see if this was something that was somewhat common with yorkie's or if it was something wrong with my doggie. it scares the living hell out of me when it happens, but I'd guess there isn't much I can do except love him and rub him and wait til he's back to normal breathing :) Thanks everyone!! |
