Ewwww... Riley's tummy obstruction update
 

Riley finished her meds on Monday, but started Sunday morning she had been trying to vomit first thing in the morning (and then fine the rest of the day). I talked to our vet yesterday telling him there was still a problem. Even over lunch yesterday she tried to vomit but only got out a couple of drops of spittle. However, he said that since she was eating fine and acting normally, it was highly unlikely that there was still an obstruction and that this behavior was most likely unrelated. Well, unlikely of course doesn’t apply to Riley. She has an OCD problem with licking and consumes carpet fibers and hair on a regular basis. I had told him that her behavior was just like what happens just before she has a fiber poop. He said just to watch her and let him know if the problem escalated.

This morning she was really trying to get something up… and finally did. This is gross, but I kid you not. She threw up a 5-inch long 1-inch thick chunk of hair and carpet fiber. Now we know why she was so sick; I can’t imagine how it ever fit in her stomach. But, this is exactly what I’d been worried would happen due to her OCD licking. So I bagged it and took it into the vet. He was in awe. Nothing really we can do, though, if it happens again but wait it out. They did send me home, though, with a tube of prescription hairball ointment (yes, for cats) for her. Hopefully with regular doses of this she will be able to pass the fiber and hair, and we can avoid another episode like this one.

My little girl wants to be a kitty. :rolleyes: All kidding aside, I'm so glad we are finally through it. I knew that she still wasn't right. And I was sure that it was a buildup of fiber/hair. It's amazing how well we know our furkids!

your baby thinks she's a cat. Thank heavens she was finally able
to get her hairball up with no surgery. I do hope you can find a
way to keep her from licking the carpet. Strange but these little
one's are a different breed of their own. Always expect the unexpected
with these guy's.

Oh I'm so glad she finally got that out of her system! Poor baby!!
I think a doggy psycologist is in order to find out why she's licking the carpet! ;)

When Kalani was younger he ate part of a plastic mat and had tummy problems off and on for a couple weeks. Finally he threw up a 'log' of plastic, carpet & hair! The vet said he was constantly licking the carpet because he was nauseous:(

I am so HAPPY that your baby was able to get that out.

Glad your baby is feeling better. I for one am happy to hear there are meds for this type of thing. I found something like you decribed on my kitchen floor :eek:. Being round and all I didn't know which end it came out of (yes, knowing me I had to smell it to know for sure it wasn't poop) or which baby did it..knowing both are lickers.:cool:

Oh, I understand that dilemma. She's had the hairballs come out both ends. Although, I have to say I prefer the backside exit! :eek:

Wow, it's seems like you handled it all very well. If it was me, I would be freaking out. Anyway, Cassi has tendency of eating hair as well. Occassionally I'll find my hair sticking out of her poop (I know gross). I've been doing everything on my end to try to pick-up my hair almost everyday from the floor and plus vacuuming almost twice a week.

Oh yeah... imagine that photo but covered in stomach slime. That's about what they look like when they come out the other end! I still can't imagine how Riley had one the size she did stuck in her poor little body. She's only 3.5 lbs!

Lol - I hear ya. So you know the true meaning of "poop on a string," too, eh? :p Even the stool sample I had to take in to the vet during all of them (but before she expelled everything) had hair in it. I'm constantly telling her "no lick" and vacuuming, sweeping, etc.

When our BBYKIN was a pup he would try chew stuff too...
We sprayed electrical cords and carpets with the apple bitter spray..maybe u could try it on the carpet ..so they would stop it ...

It won't work for Riley, believe me, I've tried. She truly has an OCD. It's not something we can really do anything about.
