Scary trip to the vet today
 

Today I took Bailey to the vet for her second series of puppy shots. This is the vet that I have used for my other two dogs and I have no complaints except for the cost, but I think that's expected. Anyway today they she had a fecal test and received a dewormer and her DHLPP-C vaccine. Everything was fine until I got into my car. Bailey threw up. I walked back in and they took us to the back where they gave her a preventative. They told me to take her home and not to feed her for 45 minutes and then feed her. They told me to watch her carefully. Of course, I was at her side for 45 minutes making sure that she was okay. I then went to feed her and she did eat a little, but about a minute later, she started throwing up again. Needless to say, I went right back to the vet (she threw up once more on the way) where they told me that they would give her the preventative again and monitor her until 2:30pm. I waited there until that time came. They brought her out and said that she was okay. They fed her and she did not throw up again and seems to be fine now. The vet told me that for her next vaccine, they will give her the preventative first before giving her the vaccine.

My frustration with this situation is knowing that little breeds are very fragile (Bailey only weighs 2 lb. 12 oz.), why not give the preventative before as a precaution? :confused: Why put a pet owner through this scare? :confused: Maybe I'm overreacting, but my first priority is the health and well-being of my Bailey and it upsets me that she had to go through this when it could have been prevented.

I am sorry about your vet visit today. I am sure they didnt because different dogs react differently to vaccine. Mine dont have any reactions and have never been given a preventative. Im sure now they know she does they will make sure she gets it

There are a lot of studies being done on all of these vaccinations. Many vets believe that we are over vaccinating.

After reading many articles, I no longer vaccinate my puppies until just before they go to their new homes. of course everyone has to decide for themselves on how many vaccinations to give. But many now agree that they do not require boosters after they are a year old, except for bordatella if you are going to board them and of course the rabies vaccination to comply with local laws.

many vets are now pushing for the laws to require rabies vaccinations once every three to 5 years.

Pet Vaccination danger - adverse reaction to routine vaccination

It appears they gave her Lepto and Corona - both of which are NON-core vaccines. Personally, I would not allow these for my dogs - I only allow the Core vaccines to be administered. The core vax are Rabies, Distemper, Parvo.

Knowing her reaction - you might want to never allow Corona or Lepto again. And, you might to ask them to give a benadryl shot before the vaccine shot. Never allow them to give a Rabies shot on the same day as any other shot.

I hope she is feeling better - that was probably really scary :(!!

Bailey is doing much better today. She is back to her normal, happy self. I'm not sure what her final series of puppy shots are, so if anyone knows, please send that information my way. The vet said that next time before any shots are administered, she will get the preventative first. I believe her next visit is her final puppy shots and her rabies, but now I'll do the shots separately. I have 2 other dogs and never have had to worry about shots, so I'm not very educated in this area. Can someone tell me what the purpose of non-core shots like Lepto and Corona is? Why administer them?

I think your vet was thinking like most people doctors. They don't give medicine unless it is necessary. I had to take pain meds one time and knew they would make me sick and told the doctor this. He said IF I got sick Then he would give me something. I think your vet was very responsible in not over medicating if he had no reason to before he gave the shots and the reaction started.

Dr. Jean Dodds, whose vaccination protocol has been adopted by vet schools across the country, does not recommend either lepto or corona.
