Hi everyone. I don't have a Yorkie, but a Chihuahua, but Yorkie talk is the site where everyone gives excellent advice, so I decided to ask here. The vet gave my puppy who is 6 months old the Lepto/ Corona virus vaccine. Since I am living in Mexico and I need to take my puppy with me to the U.S. for Christmas, I let him give it to her. She didn't swell up or anything, but about 4 hours after the vaccine she threw up and she was shaking. I called my vet and he said that as long as she wasn't swollen, then she was fine, but just to keep a close eye on her. She slept for about 4 hours and I made her some white rice and chicken breast to see if she would eat. But when I put her on the floor she just walked away from me. I'm trying to pick her up and she walks away. She's hiding under the bed, something she hasn't done since the first day that I brought her home. Should I take her in to the vet, or will she be okay? I am never giving this to her again...I'm doing titers after this. Any advice will be great. Thanks everyone in advance.

Check her gums - are they nice and pink? If they are white, you could be in trouble. And like the vet said - you really want to look for facial/cheek swelling.

If you feel she is *not* in trouble, give her some Nutrical, honey, Karo or whatever to make sure her sugar is up. Then, get some food-carbs in her - try a couple crackers, some cereal, a little yogurt - whatever she likes. Even give her some peanut butter, bits of cheese, some dog treats - just whatever it is that she gets excited about.

She could be feeling icky from these vaccines, no doubt about it. But, if she doesn't appear to be having a reaction - you probably have to ride it out.

She hasn't vomited or anything? And she is good on her feet and everything?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. She vomited at 4 p.m. today and it's 8:20 now. Other than that, she ate a small piece of chicken but when she saw me come near her she walked away from me. The main thing that she's doing is walking and hiding from me. I picked her up and she was shaking. She was sleeping, but right now I tried some peanut butter and that seemed to have woken up her appetite. :) She ate some peanut butter and then I put a little peanut butter on her chicken and she ate that too. It was a pretty nice sized piece of chicken breast. I'm going to boil some more right now so I can give it to her a little later. But now that she ate, I'm a little more relieved. Thanks for the advice. :) That's why I love Yorkie Talk! Everyone here is so helpful and sweet.

Noticeable swelling doesn't have to happen for there to be a problem.
Depression, inappetance and pain are normal.
Vomiting may be a cause for concern but is probably okay.
Shaking, unless your pup is in pain, doesn't sound right.
Did the vet say to give Benadryl?
When it doubt, go to the vet.

Thanks for the reply. I think she was shaking because she was afraid of me. That was what was really scaring me. She ate really well earlier and drank water and right now she's trying to take her kitty toy out of her carrier. She's still a bit skittish, but she's doing better. I boiled some more chicken to see if she'll take it. It was just a big scare. She had never reacted this way with her other 2 vaccines, and since I had read about the Lepto I was really worried. But she slept the whole afternoon and part of the night and now she's playing, so I'm able to breathe a little easier. Thanks again for the advice. :)

First off I wanna say that your baby is PRECIOUS!!!! OMG she's so cute....and secondly I'm so glad she's doing better.

I love YT too!!! It's a great forum..........and I think even those that don't have yorkies but still have a smaller breed can benefit just as much as yorkie owners!!! Welcome!!!

Thank you for the compliment. Your baby on your avatar is adorable. I especially love the quote on your signature. LOL! I do plan on getting a Yorkie later on, maybe in 2-3 years so my baby can have a little sister to play with. But right now, she's enjoying being the only spoiled child. :)
