eww OMG I'm freaking out!! Worm issue! HELP!! Ok I'm totally freaking out over here!! Lucie has had all her deworming meds, and since I got her we never had an issue with worms. She's about 6 1/2 months now, and she just pooped on her potty pad, I picked it up and saw these fat grayish things in her poop, I had my husband look at it, and he said it was some type of worms. *gag* I gave her some advantage at the begining of this month because my parents cats tracked fleas in that got to Lucie and Duke, she rarely goes outside and when she does it's out back, the worms weren't in her poop this afternoon and I don't know if Duke has had any in his poop cuz he goes outside, but I haven't seen anything from going outside. How could she have worms?!? I haven't caught her eating poop..And if they were in any of the other animals poop, this may be a dumb question but, will they crawl out and get into other stuff if you don't see them right away?!? I'm like hella freaked out right now, parasites are the one thing to make my skin crawl. I'm calling the vet tomorrow, but they don't open till like 9... |
Oh yuck. I have no answers - just TONS of sympathy. Good luck! |
Ick! I so feel like throwing up right now (sorry for that visual) I just called the emergency vet, the dude is probably totally making fun of me right now with the other people on staff right now. He said that she couldn't have gotten them from the cats, and really is stumped on how she may have gotten them since she has been dewormed, and my favorite part of course is that he tells me I could get them from her because I asked about her licking me....So now I really am freaking out. And since I am furious with my vet that I have been going to, I'm going to take her to the ER vet tomorrow during their regular hours. |
Fleas and worms Well here it goes. I own a farm and we raise miniature sheep. NORMALLY sheep do not get tapeworms. However, one year ours did, after our regular routine worming s throughout the year. Worm free with the exception of tape worms. We were confused. Our vet said that due to our "visiting neighbors dogs" they more than likely were bitten by fleas-as they spread tape worms. Not sure if fleas are "breed specific" or if different types of fleas can spread different types of tapeworms. Just an idea, as safeguard cured our sheep with three days worth of treatment-worked very fast. I wonder, could the fleas on the cats you said may have spread worms? I don't know if fleas can spread other types of worms, I will definitely be researching more on this topic. Hope all went well for your baby. I do know the shock and worry of discovering the worm problem when you feel you have been very proactive in a treatment plan for the unrelenting parasite control program. :) Take care, Jessica Mother to our new rescue "Addison" |
What you saw is tapeworms. You can only see them right after they poop because they die quickly when exposed to air. They get them from fleas: The Tapeworm Page |
I agree with the others... it's tapeworm... Alot of the worm meds do not cover tapeworms. There is a pill you can can from your vet that will kill them... one pill... one treatment... they will be gone!! Your Lucie probably injested a flea. Best of luck!! ;) |
I went through this with Baxter THREE TIMES!!! And was grossed out every time. I have never seen a flea on him but everyone agrees that he ate one so I just don't know. THey are easy to get rid of. Just gross. Don't be surprised if you see them again. |
thanks everyone ;) I took her to the vet the next day and he said the same thing, she got tapeworm from swallowing a flea *blllehhhh* It was soo nasty, but the medicine got rid of them and I've been keeping flea stuff of both of them so hopefully we don't have that problem again! |

I don't think they were tapeworms if they were fat and greyish. Tapeworms are small and white and look like little pieces of rice. There is another type of worm.. I think it's roundworms(?) that are also visible. They can pick up worms anywhere that has worms living in the ground so public soil, things like that. I've been through worms with both of my dogs. I panicked like you did at first but I've kinda gotten used to it! It's no big deal. Just have them dewormed and make sure you wash your hands after handling their poop. And don't worry, as long as you take the proper precautions (like washing your hands), you shouldn't have anything to worry about. They won't get on your furniture or on you or anything like that. |

I don't know what it is with her. I've never had to deal with it with Duke, but she's gotten them twice now. |
