Stupid question: How do you get a urine sample? My other dogs are, shall we say? "taller". I learned a trick from the vet techs, who follow the dogs with a plastic soup ladle (the long handled kitchen ones) that they can swoop in and do a urine catch. Males, obviously, are easier than the girls, but with enough clearance, you can "catch" them, too. However, the Yorkies are so low to the ground, there's no WAY I can catch urine. Bella practically sits on the ground; Puddie still squats like a girl, not quite as low as Bella, but certainly not high enough to catch. Does a piddle pad suffice? How do you do it? I know that one of these days they're going to ask me to bring in a sample, and I haven't the foggiest idea how to do it with such a "low" dog???? |
More than likely you won't be able to do it. I used to follow Muffin around with those little plastic containers that nurses dispense pills in to patients. She was older, and therefore calmer, so I was able to do it with her. I doubt if I could catch Kacee's. At least, not until she's older and calmer. Then they'll let you do just about anything. No. A piddle pad won't suffice. It has to be in a container and sterile. |
For Ellie, when she squats I put a small measuring cup under her. It is a tight fit.;) To get a sample from a pee pad, turn it over and let them pee then pour it into something. That is a table top sample though and there is too much chance for it to be contaminated with bacteria. If you can't get one, any vet should be able to take it (cystocentesis). That way the least amount of bacteria is introduced anyway. |

Ellie has had a few of them and she does fine.:) It is a quick procedure and I've never heard her scream when the vet does it, so I guess it isn't too bad. |
Ok ... if you say so :(. I just know that sooner or later, they're gonna want a sample. And Bella will make things difficult: she's one of those "squat and scoot" pee'ers. Puddie at least stays put in one spot, just looooooow to the ground. |
How not to collect a sample. I got a kit from the vet. Everytime I tried to put the container under Gus, he jumped and stopped urinating. In desparation, one Sunday afternoon, Gus made a huge puddle on the hardwood floor. I suctioned a sample with the syringe and put it in the container. I didn't know whether to refrigerate it or keep it at room temperature. Decided on the latter (wrong). Urinalysis showed a very high bacterial content. What's more my wife and I didn't see Gus urinate. So, we wondered if it was his urine or our from our other Yorkie. With the uncertainty, and bacterial content, I needed a good sample from Gus. Forturnately, the next morning I was able to collect it correctly. Bacterial content was still high. |
Loki has needed to give so many urine samples that he pees on command and doesn't even look at me funny when I stick the container under him :) I use those disposable sandwich containers. For Sammy I've used a paper plate (with the waxy coating) and then dumped it into the container. If you can't get one, they can get one at the vet. Let the vet tech figure it out :) Mine don't use pads but some people on here have suggested turning the pad over to the plastic side and then pouring it into a container. GOOD LUCK :D |
I've made a decision: my dogs are just not going to get sick and need that kind of testing :p . So THERE! Put *that* in your pipe and smoke it! ;) :D (I hope!!!) |

If it only worked that way... Pets should have a urinalysis every year, especially when they get older, even if they are healthy. I really do have to work to get the cup under Ellie. It is possible though. :) |
When I needed to get a urine sample from Libby, I took one of those little medicine cups, sterilized it and after it was cool, I put it over Libby's wee wee and then put a diaper on her to hold it in place. Then I took her outside and sure enough...she squatted and peed and I carefully took the diaper off and had the urine sample I needed. Was that innovative or what? LOL |

This is going to be fun (NOT!!!!) |
when I needed a sample from auggie, the best thing to do was first thing in the morning I would take him out follow him around with a plastic plate and use a syringe to gather the sample |
I put plastic wrap over a pee pad and got a clean good sample. This works for pad trained dogs. |
