Willy may have panceatitis?! Hello all, I haven't been on in such a long time, but now I really need some of your expertise. Willy has been diabetic since Christmas and has been doing pretty well. Sunday he started throwing up so I took him to the vet, with a urine sample, and he once again has ketones. So he is hanging out at the vet trying to get better. When the dr. called last evening they have done bloodwork and are leaning towards a diagnosis of pancreatitis, which could also be what caused his diabetes. They wanted to put him on Hills wd, which he was on a few months ago, and caused him to itch uncontrollably(I believe he cannot tolerate the corn), so I told her that we cannot do that due to the corn issue. So she asked me to make him some rice & boiled chicken for them to feed him, and that she would like him on a really low fat diet. So what I was wondering is if any of you have experience with this, and what seems to work for you. We are currently feeding canidae canned & chicken soup dry. Ellie had pancreatitis once and she got terribly itchy on prescription food (given for something else). She eats homecooked and it is 18% fat which isn't low but her vet is fine with it. The pancreas issue could've caused the diabetes. How long does the vet want you to feed chicken and rice? |
You can also bake skinless, trimmed chicken breasts in tin foil sealed in tin foil. Just be sure to remove them immediately so that they don't absorb any of the fat that cooked out of them. It is bland. You can feed the chicken breast with the dry food and he should do just fine. I had a friend with a little one that had pancreatitis and I took care of her many, many times when they were gone. That is how I started feeding mine the baked chicken breasts. They like it. Let us know how it goes. |
The vet hasn't told me how long for the chicken & rice yet. I think she is trying to find something else to feed him. So far everything the vets office carries for this contains corn, and I am not going to feed him that. I don't mind doing homecooked food if necessary. Pancreatitis My baby is inrecovery mode NOW. I have given her oatmeal, plain, make it soupy and i have given her beech nut baby food, chicken flavored. You just have to be careful that the bayfood doesn't contain any onion powder as it is toxic to dogs.....good luck |
I bake Conner's chicken (boneless, skinless chicken breasts) in a broiler pan. Any fat goes to the bottom of the pan. I make enough for about 2 weeks. I cut up the chicken and put in individual small containers (Rubbermaid). I take out the containers the night before for the next day. |
Solid gold has dry dog food that is only 6 ot 8 % fat and my friend feeds that to her yorkie/sily who has had pancreatitis, their are not many good dog foods that are low fat, and she feed her evangers low fat wet food. |
Pancreatitis Thanks for all the responses. Willy finally came home Friday lunch. The vet really gave me no info on what to feed Willy. So thanks to you all I have some ideas. Those of you who are feeding the Chicken breast, how much are you feeding & what does your yorkie weigh? As Willy is a BIG boy weighing in at 17lbs, and I want to make sure I am feeding him enough. My boy yorkie had pancreatitis and he has ibd now and pancreatitis over and over can lead to diabetes. The pancreas controls the insulin in the body so they are tied closely together. My boy yorkie also itched like crazy on hills ultra z/d diet. We finally figured out he cannot tolerate white potato which many foods have white potato in it. White potato is inflammatory also and is not good for diabetes. That being said my boy yorkie is not on purina ha and has not had any bouts of vomitting since for 2 years and he was a sick boy for 1 year being hospitalized a few times until we realized the potato was the culprit. Purina ha is a soy hydrolized diet and many dogs with pancreatitis and ibd are doing well on it. Also you may want to join dogpancreatitis@yahoogroups.com as well as a diabetes group to learn more about the two you are dealing with but being that you have the diabetes and pancreas issue i would stay away from carrots, white potato and get to a very basic diet. You may want to give the ha a try as it has definitely worked for my guy - do i think it is the best food in the world no but it works |
oh forgot to say my boy yorkie had it so bad he had a plasma transfusion :( he relapsed a few times and over the course of a year cost me 10k so we are very strict with diet - no treats. Internal medicine specialist told us vet should have never fed hills i/d and wish they would get it off the list as it made my guy relapse -- it has pork in it which is very high in fat |
Lady has been a diabetic for seven years and I refused to feed her Hills W/D. It's horrible food, full of cheap fillers. No wonder poor Willy can't tolerate it. They have done a lot of research in the past few years about canine diabetes and found that diabetic dogs do really well on the high protein foods like Innova Evo and Natures Variety Prairie (not raw). Lady has food allergies and rotating through their foods as recommended worked really well. She was much better regulated on the high protein food, too.
