young male yorkie with leathery ears/no hair I took in a few yorkies from a small hobby breeder friend a few months ago. One of these is a small male, 3 yrs old only 3 lbs. He has normal coat, healthy, etc. Checked out by vet. But one thing has us stumped. He has absolutely NO hair on his ears. They are leathery - not dry or damaged. Has anyone heard of this symptom or phenom? No mites, No drainage in ears or hearing problems. |
Could he be a blue born Yorkie? If so, I pray the breeder wasn't using him as a stud. Top Yorkie Genetics Chocolate Yorkies Chocolate Yorkie Red Golden Blue Born Yorkshire Terrier |
I've seen threads about "leather ear," sometimes called "winter ear" Some feel it's a fungal infection b/c it sometimes responds to antifungal creme. I'm not sure if that's what you're describing, but for more info, here's one of the previous treads" http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ing-again.html |
It's called black ear....the ears need to stay warm. It's caused by a fungal bacteria but no one knows where it comes from and usually it will start on the ears and go to the nose and tail area and lose hair in those places. My suggestion is to keep the ears warm as much as possible. I have a bitch that has/had it but since I keep the house at a normal temp range and let her go out in the sunshine and keep her ears warm some of the hair has grown back but will never have long flowing ear hair. I hope this helps some...I haven't found anything that will grow the hair completely back on the ears and I've tried just about everything...but she does have some hair Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

Didn't Terri Schumsky/Vassar Square have an article on her web site on treating black ear or yorkie crud.....something about using Lotrimin 2% on clearing it up and getting the hair to grow back. Mary |
