Side effects of rabies vaccine
 

We just got a new 51/2 month old puppy last friday, 9-26-08. We took him to the vet about a weel later for a check up and for a fecal exam. Well, while in there they pressured us to give him his rabies vaccine. I know it is required by the law but according to our vet it is mandated that all pups receive it by 3 months in the state of PA (we just moved here and got our dog from WV). Anyways, he received his shot on thursday and was seemed fine for a few hours, just sleeping on and off which I know is a normal side effect. Later that evening he had runny stool and all day yesterday he had the same thing plus he vomited twice. He did eat a little bit yesterday but naturally I am worried because he is only 2.8 pounds. The vet said that it could upset his stomach and when I tried to call they are not in today. To make matters worse my husband called the breeder pertaining to another issue and he told her that he was sick after his rabies vaccine, and she flipped out stating that he should have been at least six months when he got it!! Why didn't the vet tell us this?! But when he got his shot he was a week shy of turning 6 months, so do you guys think it really matters? And are these side effects that your yorkies have had from the dreaded rabies vaccine??

It is best to wait til 6 months but the law is the law, so the vet was just doing their job. Three months is waaaay too early though. If the vet thinks the dog is too small, they could possibly sign a waiver for you.

Since your pup is so small and if the vomiting and diarrhea are continuing, you may need to take him to any vet that can see him today. Are his gums pink?

Hi, keep pedialyte handy if the pup is throwing up and has d. As furparents we haaave to put our foot down with the vet. If you don't feel comfortable with something, tell him so, research it and then proceed. I refuse the lepto shot, all the time. Sometimes its best to give one vaccine at a time, get one, come back the next day, so the pup won't be "overloaded".

Yes his gums are pink. As of today he hasn't vomited and he has been eating and drinking, but he has been sleeping pretty much all day.

I agree with you. My dog is never getting the lepto or the kennel cough vaccine. I know the rabies is required by law but he doesn't even go outside!! He is not going to come into contact with a rabid animal!! However, we live in an apartment complex and if a maintence man came in said our pup snapped at him and we could not provide his rabies vaccine they would take him away. All I know is I hate the way the vaccines affect dogs and I am going to start taking Ace (our yorkie) to a holistic vet. Also I was reading that they give a yorkie the same amount of a vaccine as they would a german shepard!! I know I am not a professional when it comes to this matter but that seems absurd! The rabies vaccine is probably over 10 times more potent than it needs to be because they are afraid for human lives but in general the same amount is given to a Yorkie as a large dog because it takes a certain amount to get an immune response, so size isn't really considered.

I hate all these vaccines too.
Because of the reaction, your pup should probably be premedicated with Benadryl next time.

Benadryl is exactly what we have to do for our little guy before going in for shots and he is tiny also.

These vaccines are evidently way too strong for these smaller dogs. Although the vaccine doesn't cause GME ,if dogs have a trace of this diseases , vaccine's accelerates it.

There is a blood test you can get after a dog has been vaccinated once , each year they can be tested to see if they need the shot that year. I personally will never vaccinate my dog again. Mine received her yearly shot in June of this year and has been really sick since. Its like an epidemic. There have been a lot of people that have experienced the same thing.
