Bernie has vomited a little blood 2x I'll try to stay calm here... this morning at 6:00 a.m. Bernie started gaging and vomited what he ate for dinner, also a little blood. In some of the stuff he spit up was a small sharp piece of a cheap rawhide that someone gave him at the nursing home yesterday. Not something I feed him, but it was too late. It looked like it was sharp enough that it could have very well scratched something. I couldn't take him to the vet today, because I was under subpoena for my job all day, was in court for 8 hours. When I got home this afternoon, he seemed fine, running, playing, went outside for his business. Then about 7:00 he vomited again, and there was blood again, but it was really light pink. He didn't want to eat his raw, so I'm boiling a potato to see if he will eat that. I know you guys are going to say take him to the vet. I will...first thing in the morning. There was no one to take him to after I got out of court, and too, I thought he was ok, until just now. This has never happened before so I'm a little shaken up and don't know what to do. Please, even moral support will help right now. Thanks, Denise |
Can I give him Pepto, if so how much? |
Oh, dear. Rawhide can be so dangerous. It shrinks when it is processed and can swell when swallowed and cause an obstruction. Gastric juices don't break it down. It is also processed with toxic chemicals. If he can't keep food down and there is blood in his vomit, I think you need to take him to the emergency vet. We don't have an emergency vet. I'm just about to feed him a potato and see if he can keep that down. He kept his breakfast down this morning, and is pooping ok. We're going in the morning. I am taking him... |
When was his last bowel movement? The thing about rawhide is that it can cause an obstruction. Signs of this are no pooping, loss of appetite, and the worse sign is vomiting. If he hasn't had a bowel movement in 24 hours and is vomiting, I would get him to the vet as soon as possible. Oh, I just read that his pooping ok, that's good news. Hope he's feeling better soon. |
Oh Denise :( !!!! I agree with what's already been said. I mean, you can try some Pepto and try feeding Potato. But, this may be a real emergency. What are his gums like? Is his tummy hard/distended? And he did poop? He's alert and all? |
If it's pink now though, that makes me think that perhaps whatever was initially bleeding may now be healing over, but still irritating his tummy. Poor fella. If he doesn't want potatoes, you could also see if wants some bread, or a few bland crackers. |
Bernie is back to normal now. Boy did I learn my lesson. Make sure I tell people don't feed my babies, however I don't know if they gave it to him, or he just took it. Thanks everyone. For helping me through another crisis! |
How scary!! Im glad he is doing better |

I am glad he is feeling better. If he ever throws up again, you can offer rice and hamburger meat, it helps settle his tummy. |
I am just now seeing this. What a scare you had. I am glad hes doing better |
I'm glad he is feeling better. I was curious though, what are the health affects of potatoes? |

SO glad he's okay:thumbup::thumbup: Maybe you could bring a bag of tiny treats for the seniors to give Bernie, that way they get to give him something? |

Thank you all for your concern! I do take treats for the seniors to feed my babies, I had just left him for a second with some distant family members. I didn't leave him there but a few minutes. That's all it takes, huh. Thanks again. |
