10 month old - showing odd behavior Please help.... Yesterday afternoon...KiKi was sleeping on her blanket in the living room...when she woke up...she stood there and she was blinking and twitching very oddly...I picked her up and it passed within a few minutes Then later last night, she was sleeping next to me on the couch, and my daughter came in the door and KiKi woke up a little startled and AGAIN she was blinking and twitching...it lasted a little longer, but it did stop... KiKi seems fine and no after affects... Has anyone seen this or heard of this before? |
never heard but i am posting so it will be up again... maybe someone else can help you ... good luck ! |
It sounds like a seizure of some sort. |
I don't have any advice but hopefully someone will be able to help. |

Thanks for your help and comments. I did research this online and I found that some dogs have epiltic siezures of this form and if they if this happens once a month or less...then medication is not warranted. I will keep my eye on her and if this happens again..I will take her to the vet right away. Today she has been perfectly normal..playing and eating as usual...:animal36 |

Actually, monthly seizures would need medication. A phenomenon called "kindling" occurs each time someone has a seizure. The brain actually rewires itself to make a path so the next seizure is easier. This pattern continues and can lead to cluster seizures (several seizures in one day) which is very dangerous. If a dog only has one or two seizures a year, no medication is usually recommended. This website has been my bible ever since Lady was diagnosed with epilepsy nine years ago: Canine epilepsy and diseases that cause seizures in dogs |
KiKi had another episode today...again it was when she woke up...THAT is the strange part....and it is very brief...I did contact the vet and KiKi will see the vet on Friday..I am asking for liver shunt test and a complete blood work up... The frightening part for me in all this is that I am leaving next week for 2 weeks and KiKi will be in the care of my 2 grown children who still live at home....I am so concerned about leaving her... I hope the vet can give me some answers .... |

She had no issues today and seems fine... I will keep you posted... Thanks for your input!;) |
Update: KiKi had her appt at the vet...I made her fast from 8 last night..and the vet checked her sugar level....it was on the low to normal side...he in convinced that her episodes are from low blood sugar, which she does have a history of hypoglocemia...so it makes sense..but he did think it was strange that it happened when she wakes up...but if she is napping or sleeping because her sugar is low...she may be very low when she wakes up... He suggested giving her Kyro syrup 2 x's a day - weather we thinks she needs it or not. He felt there was no need for a full blood work up to be done....I appreciate his honestly...most vets would just do it..take the $$....knowing it's not needed. I feel a little better now... |
