Car sickness Have any of your babies ever had car sickness? Friday on the way home from the breeders Bailey got sick and I thought it was because it was a 50 mile trip and maybe he was a little nervous. However today we took him for a short drive and he got sick again. Is there anything over the counter I can give him? He has a vet appointment Tuesday and I don't want him to get sick before we get there. |
Ginger can help, even Benadryl can help. I've heard of a lot of different things that others have listed, all of which are escaping me now!! EllieMay (aka Crystal) I think uses something too, it might be ginger, but it may be something else as well. You could also use Pepto - 1/2 tsp, to settle the stomach - but I think there are other things that work better.... |

Is he still a puppy? Bella would get carsick everytime she was in the car, even less than 1 mile! After her first birthday though she outgrew it. Our vet gave us a medicine to give to her about 10mins before each car ride, and it lasted like 4 hours, can't remember the name of it, but I'm sure your vet would know what to give him. I've also been recommended benadryl, but I can't remember ever trying it. In the meantime though I would recommend keeping him in a crate or carrier. We kept Bella in her carrier and put a peepad on the bottom of it, so that way we weren't constantly having to clean the car, or the carrier, and we always brought babywipes to wipe her up with after she got sick...it made the mess a lot easier to clean up, and trust me, I am not one for cleaning up puke! Usually I make a bigger mess myself just trying! |

He's 9 months old and since the breeder had so many dogs I'm sure he's never been out much. That's a great idea about the pee pad in the carrier. I'm not one for cleaning it up either in fact the only time I do it is when dh isn't around and then I have to. :( But that's part of being a mommy. |
I've given a 1/2 of a ginger snap cookie. We drove for an hour and she didn't get sick. Whether or not it was due to the cookie I'll never know but she didn't throw up. Hot Rod used to get sick as a pup when I had him in a carrier on the carseat. Once I got him the snoozer seat, he was fine. |
My Quigley also gets car sick. The only time I take him out now is to the vet as it is not worth upsetting him. Cassie also gets sick when she sees him throw up so I make sure they cant see each other. Samantha is my only one that does not get sick. Tabatha is still a puppy and gets car sick on longer rides but is ok on short rides. Have not tried any remedies as of yet but the cookies sounds like a good idea. Will have to buy some for the next trip. |
Muffin got sick when she was a puppy, too. It eventually passed. You don't want to feed him within two hours of going in the car. Taking him for short rides frequently should help him get over it. |
Bonine is good for this, it is a human product for motion sickness. I only give 1/8 to mine and it does the trick, others use 1/4 Always consult with your vet to see if your dog/pup is OK to be given this product. I have found it does not cause the drugged effect that some of the other products do. Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |
mitzy gets so sick no matter how far the trip is.. shes a little over a year old and hasnt outgrown this.. ive found if i dont feed her in the morning before we go she is ok and i give her half of a dramamine (for motion sickness) we tried the ginger snaps because i didnt like the idea of dramamine but she threw those up.. so we tried the vets way and the dramamine works. she usually sleeps on long rides i dont give her the meds on short trips (less than 30 mins) cause shes knocked out lol |
Ellie used to throw up on car rides then I started giving her a ginger snap before leaving. No more car sickness. Now I don't even have to give her one and she is fine. I'm not sure if she outgrew it or what because she was older when we started this, so it wasn't just a puppy thing with her. I would always recommend trying ginger before any drug that can affect breathing and heart rate. |
Ginger is good for humans, too. I'll get the candied ginger that they sell in the oriental food section and munch on that whenever we travel: I get sick in/on anything that moves . I'm *such* fun at an amusement park :lol tears: What about Rescue Remedy? I'd read so much about it, I finally had to find a health food store to get some. Neither of my dogs gets out much for rides (and at the cost of gas, they're not *going* to, either!!!). Bella will get sick; Puddie just sits there and pants until his tongue looks like a belly-warmer tie! I even got them a Snoozer Look-Out seat, but that doesn't seem to help much. I thought the Rescue Remedy would be good???? |
I give Feather Benadryl and it does help. We were on a 6 hour car trip last week and it's the first time she didn't throw up on a trip over a 1/2 hour |
Bowie doesnt really get sick, but he shakes ansd whines. I firt put him in a carrier but he cried and on my lap hes scared, what can i do? |
