Is anyone there? Frankie seems to have phlem caught in his throat. What do I do for this? He has a real hard time breathing while this is happening. I watched him earlier while he was drinking water and he would drink real fast then loose his breath, then drink real hard. This scares the hell outta me. I stuck my finger in his mouth but that seemed to make it worse. It's almost 5 am. |
It sounds like something that could become very serious, very quickly. Especially in such little animals. I would call your emergency vet and go with his instructions. Please keep us posted! |
I will most definately do that. He is now sleeping, he seems fine but It still scares the hell outta me. Thank you for responding |
I would most definately get him to the vet, if it does not get much better soon. My son & daughter-in-laws yorkie ate something while we were visiting them last week and got something caught in his throat he was coughing and wheezing trying to get it up or go down. He didn't do it for long though someone came to the door and he started barking and it dislodge itself. But, I would most definately get him to the vet if it continues. Good Luck |
Has he been vaccinated for kennel cough? Sedrick picked up kennel cough at the daycare he goes to and I find especially in the morning he wakes up coughing and has phlegm in his throat. It's not pleasant but it will go away. To be safe, yes take him to the vet and get them to check this. They will likely prescribe him a cough suppressant and maybe keep him near a humidifier to keep the phlegm loose. Lorraine |
Kennel Cough I agree with previous post. Sounds like it could be kennel cough. We have 5 dogs in our home and had a terrible bout with it this past winter. It most of the time is not dangerous or life threatening but can turn into a pneumonia. Antibiotics should be given regardless and sometimes, for weeks. My pom coughs so hard in the morning he vomits - its actually realted to the whooping cough (I am a physician assistant) so know that one well. |
I am really no help, as I have no suggestion other than check with your vet...but I hope he gets better soon!! Please keep us updated.... |
How is the little guy? |
Make sure to get him in a soon as you can. If it is kennelcough you dont want it to turn into pnuemonia. |
Thanks for checking on Frankie. The first night was real scary then he was fine all day. About 1:00 in the am he did it again but not so bad. I took him in. The Doc did a thorough exam. I requested x-rays cuz when the doc shifted his rear leg he freaked. Turns out he has Leggs - Calve - Perthes disease. Ever heard of it? I haven't. It's in the hip area. They mentioned they could do surgery but he doesn't seem to be bothered by it at this moment. He still chokes a little during the day but it is getting calmer. He's on antibiotics now. |
Poor baby - I'm so glad you went into the vet but sorry to hear the diagnosis - at least you know what you're dealing with - I am sure not a doctor but I CAN say try to keep him from jumping on things - and that's really hard to do with yorkies....Poor little guy - hope he feels better ...I'm glad he wasn't choking too - you had a tough few days there. |

After surgery the muscle/tissue need to heal and grow again over the top of the femoral head bone. Schatzie carried her leg around and never used it prior to surgery, I also could tell she was in pain. What happens is the femoral head becomes jagged and painful to the dogs. This is not a disease that goes away without surgery. |
Ya know, As far as Frankie's choking goes - I still don't know what's causing it. That really bothers me. I don't know what to stop or not stop. For his leg, it has never seemed to bother him. I mean he runs and plays and does spins, so I'm not real anxious to get surgery but it is sure nice to know somewone else has dealt with this when the time comes. Thank You so much. |
