Question regarding Luxating Patella Can LP and the stage of LP be accurately diagnosed without xrays? |
The vet can tell a lot from just feeling and try to grade it. Xrays should give them a better idea. The problem is, if surgery is attempted, it isn't unheard of for it to be worse than what it looked like on the xrays. |

I do believe Roxy's was Grade 2 and 3 but after surgery the surgeon downgraded to 1 and 2 :scratchhe The bottom line is you don't know 100% sure until the leg is open and they can actually see what's going on :D |

...well, being that I have been there with Roxy, I jumped and said - NO WAY - you need to have her seen by an Ortho Specialist and get some true facts, get a Grade and recommendation...so they have an appt. with an Ortho Specialist on Monday. |
not to hijack this thread....but how and when do you know whether or not to do surgery? |

Once cartilage is worn away you will have bone rubbing on bone (not a good feeling)... After I saw 2 different Vets at 2 different practices, then I saw 2 different Ortho Specialists from 2 different practices, then I researched and digested it all. Then Roxy started to limp and carry her leg frequently, that's when I knew it was time :( |
Some dogs can go thru their whole lives with a grade 1 or 2 LP but it should be corrected if it reaches grade 3. Vets. can tell what grade by feeling and bending the leg. My Azrael has a grade 2 in both knees and has not gotten worse in three years. My Zada had a grade 3 in both knees which was corrected at the same time. |
Luxating Patella Luvy had surgery for luxating patella on Tuesday. It is not an easy surgery on them. I would only consider a Dr. that has Ortho training that has done MANY of these type surgeries. It is a major invasive surgery. With extensive recovery - 8 to 10 plus weeks. Luvy did not have x rays. Once her Surgeon examined her leg he knew she was at a stage 4. We always knew Luvy was going to need the surgery. Her Dr. explained to us if you wait to long they run the chance of permanent damage. Sometimes they can not tell the level until they get in. I would atleast go to a Surgeon for a consultation. |
Libby has grade 2 in both back legs. When she first had trouble, she seemed to carry one of her legs up quite a bit. I give her Flexicose (glucosamine complex) and haven't had a problem in a long time. My vet says if I keep her skinny, she will be fine. I'm glad my vet isn't quick to do surgery, as I've read that the surgery alone can cause arthritis. |
Thank you all for your responses and PM's! :) |
brooklyns hip brooklyn started limping on her right leg then she started hopping like a bunny. we took her to a surgon and the had to remove her whole ball joint in her hip. they said it was bone on bone rubbing. this was 2 weeks ago and now she is running like crazy again. the surgery was expencive but well worth it. terryy |
Georgie was diagnosed a couple years ago with having a luxating patella. The vet said as long as it doesn't bother him or get worse not to worry. However, about 3 weeks ago he started yelping and shaking. Shortly after that he was fine but when it happened again I took him to the vet. She actually said it the knee cap was out when she felt it and recommended surgery. She does several luxating patella surgeries a month and was very comforting. Just last Friday he had surgery and is doing AWESOME:) I stayed home with him for 3 days and during the day he stays with his grandma while we are at work. I was a nervous wreck about the surgery but he is so resilient and I am glad that we did it. |
Lucy was born with grade 4 LP. I got her anyway, not realizing just how expensive it would be. Also, I was worried about what would happen to her if I didn't take her. (I don't regret it, she is the sweetest little dog and the best little Therapy Dog and has brought a great deal of joy to my life.) My vet knew right away that it was too severe for him to deal with. He has done that surgery before and since, but for Lucy he recommended a specialist. The specialist has better diagnostic tools than my regular vet. The surgery was done when she was 4 months old. |
