My Yorkie Scratching My middle yorkie, Gus, will scratch certain areas until he bleeds. I've taken him to the vet and they can't find anything wrong. He started scratching behind his ears, so I had the vet check his ears...nothing wrong. Now he is scratching the area between his shoulder blades. He has been on the same food since birth, Royal Canin, has no fleas, and the rest of his skin looks perfect...no flaking...etc. I don't feed table scrapes....only their food and very few treats...from Trader Joe's. I'd appreciate any help. |
I'd definitely take him off of RC. Meeko was one that from his breeder and use to scratch a lot! I switched him to a grain-free food and he hasn't scratched since. The problem is most dogs are allergic to corn and grains and RC has both in their food. Some good grain-free foods that are popular here are canidae, merrick, wellness core, and innova evo. There's a website (Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble) that rates dog food. I try to stick with 5 or 6 star foods. It depends on what you have available in your area. Good luck! |
Yes, I would take him off the RC Fantasia was on the RC and she scratch all the time .she could not sleep at night. I took her to the vet and he could not find anything wrong with her he put her on meds and she still scrached. Oneday I could not take it and came to the yorkie site and I was amazed at the number of people that talked about the RC and how it made their yorkie scratched. I took her off that day and she has been fine. I felt so bad cause I felt like I made her suffer by giving her the RC. |
Thanks for all the advice....today is Gus' 2nd birthday and I hate it that he is so itchy....I was going to buy food tomorrow..so this is a great time to change. Canidae, Merrick, Wellness Core, and Innova evo were recommended. Are there any other recommendations? I really appreciate the help. |
this is good to know. my yorkie has been scratching and i feed him royal canin. i thought that it was a good brand... |
chester has the itchies to something as well not his food, my vet suggested salmon oil on his food the fatty acids is good for skin just like us humans. Good food to check out is solid gold, innova, canidaie, and merrick are some of the few. I also will rinse chester off with lukewarm water as well. There is a product called buddy boo boo from cloud star that I will put on chester if the spots are not too bad. good luck |
Thanks....I bathed him today and rinsed him with apple cidar vinegar/water....thought maybe soap residue was bothering his skin. Where can I purchase the Bubbly Boo Boo for the hot spots? |
Ya it sound like food allergies to me too.. |
Chachi itched when he was eating RC too |
