Yorkie with PLN I have two yorkies Kirby is 10(black/tan) and Cricket is 6(silver), Cricket was just diagnosed with PLN just a few weeks ago and we have been going through quite alot with her. I was told the PLN stands for Protien Losing Nathroposis, she has to much protien in her Urine and not enough in her blood. She is taking 6 medicines and also on a special dog food. we are hoping in a few weeks she will be able to come off most of the medicine, but we do know she will have to take one of them for the rest of her life however long that might be. We were told by the vets she could live six months or a couple of years just depending on how strict we were with the food and medicine. As of 09/02/08 she is now only taking two medicine Enacrad and Liquid baby Asprin, she is eating Roayl Canine LP. I was wondering if there was anyone on this forum that has or has had a yorkies or any dog with this problem? Thanks for any feedback |
I haven't any knowledge of this. I just wanted to wish you luck with your little one. It must be very difficult to deal with. I am sure that someone will be on who can help you with your questions. |
Pln Our little DJ had PLN and Gluomerii (kidney filters) damage as well as a liver shunt as discovered by several biopties done just after we adopted him at 6 yrs old. The vet specialist gave him 3-4 months but I kept him going for another 1 1/2 yr before his little kidneys finally shut down. It was right after we laid our older yorkie Harley (13yrs) to rest the week before from kidney problems. It was heart breaking to watch our little one slowly die. If you would like, PM me and I will send you links that go into more detail about pet kidney disease, how to treat them. I apologize if I am too late |
That would be great if you could send those, she seems to be doing well at the moment, she seems like her old self. It has been almost six months since she was diganoised and she goes back this month to have her blood checked to see how her levels are doing. She likes the food ok and she gets a treat every now and again but it is hard because we have another yorkie and he is in good health and I feel like I deprive him of things because of her illness, but I guess it is better for him also since he is getting older and does not need all the fat and calories in the treats anyway. Thanks so much for responding I really appreciate it. Happy New Year!! |
This sounds like what my Toby had. He blew up like a balloon. The protein was filling up in his system. Then he developed stones from it. Fortunately we had an incredible vet that did a lot of research and found an easy answer. Toby since has passed away in November but he lived to 17 with this illness and he had it for about 9-10 years, but that wasn't what he died from. He started having seizures and we think he had a stroke on his last day. But what he was given was Royal Canin or Medi-cal diet as well as 1/2 a prednisone pill every other day and a cap full of MCT bodybuilding oil mixed with his food. He also had a sprinkle of polycitrate in his food to prevent stone from coming back. I hope this helps. The MCT oil is hard to find in the US. We live in Canada and had it shipped from Vancouver. |
Cricket is taking 0.3 of liquid asprin and also 1 tablet of Enacard daily, she eats Royal Canine LP. I think we caught this very early and hopefully that is why we have had good results. When we did bring her home from the vet she was taking six medicines but she came off all of those but two. She will continue to take the two I listed above for the rest of her life which hopefully will be a long one. The vet told me she could live six months or six years it just depending on how well she responded to the medicines and also being very strict with her food. They also suggested using one tablet of fish oil in her food every other day and we have been doing that aslo. Thanks so much for responding it is nice to know that there are other dog owners out there that have experienced the same things. |
I've never heard of this, but wish you all the luck in the world. |
