Eclampsia and feeding the babies Last night mama had a very severe eclapsia attack. It took hours for her to recover. Now she wants back in with the babies. The babies are 4w 5d old. She tried to get in with another females babies and they are only a few days old. I am worried her milk might not be good anymore. What says everyone? Sylvia |
I have never encountered eclampsia, but read the following: Dogs with eclampsia usually require immediate emergency care. The definitive treatment involves returning blood calcium levels to normal and decreasing calcium loss from the body, which may include weaning and hand feeding the puppies. Treatment usually includes: Calcium (calcium gluconate) given very slowly An intravenous or oral dextrose solution to increase blood sugar Anti-seizure drugs (e.g. Valium®) if [URL="http://www.petplace.com/dogs/eclampsia-in-dogs/page1.aspx#"] |
I've only read about it - but from what I remember she shouldn't be nursing or it could happen again because she's going to lose more calcium....I think if you do a 'eclampsia' search in the breeder section you'll find all sorts of good information there - I did find this thread - http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...-must-see.html I didn't watch the video yet but thought it might help - and ask your vet about her nursing - if it was severe ...I don't think you should let her till you find out if it's ok |
I would PM txshopper73 for some advice. She had a girl with a bout of eclampsia a while back and handled it like a pro. |
At 4 wks plus you can wean the puppies, have you tought of using a "belly band or wrap"??? You can keep her from nursing... I never had eclampsia... thanks God , but you can also feed her some SCIENT DIET A/D and can wean the puppies with it as well.. very rich food for surgery recovery , prescription you can get at your vets.... will help her get back... offer it to the puppies, they do not love it at first and then when hunger kicks in they will devour... just do not keep giving for too long, transition them to puppy food in 2-3 days.... Good luck... everybody will be fine !!!! Good thing is that your puppies are not like a week old.... |
You need to supplement the pups with formula and keep mom from nursing. YOu can take an ACE bandage, wrap mom's teats (not too tight to restrict blood flow) and put a newborn onsie over her. Let her be a mom by cleaning and being with the pups but in no way should mom be allowed to nurse the babes. Also, at first sign of eclampsia, you can give Calsorb (get from your vet and keep a tube on at all times) and immediately get her in to a vet. They can go down VERY quick and moms have died as a result. |
This has happened to me. Luckily, we were able to save the mom & all 4 of the babies. The babies were only 2 weeks old when it happned to me, so you are better off already! Anyway, I WOULD NOT let her nurse these pups again. It's not worth what might happen. We almost lost our Gellica, but we lucky enough to have an ER vet only minutes away. |
Thank you everyone. She is doing fine and not trying to get in with the babies anymore. She was being a VERY good stay at home mom. I guess she either didn't eat enough or staying with the babies finally over taxed her. The babies are doing fine now. I have named them King, Duchess, Princess, Queenie and Prince. If their new mamas and daddys don't like their names they can change them but I have to call them something. LOL Villette, I will save that article for future reference. Thank you. Sylvia |
