Hair loss I just adopted a 3 year old Yorkie a week ago and took him to the vet. He got all his shots, and some medicine for a yeast/bacterial infection near his tail. I had noticed that his hair was pretty thin and asked the vet if that was normal for the breed, and he said not necessarily. He didn't say there was anything wrong. Duke (my yorkie) has been taking the medicine, but his hair is still falling out in patches. These patches aren't red or weeping, but his skin appears black. Can someone help a new yorkie owner figure all this out? Thanks so much!!!! Stevie |
His hair shouldnt be falling out and yorkies dont shed so if there is hair loss there is some kind of skin problem. It could be alllergies or mites. Your vet would have to do a skin scape to see if its mites. Is he itching |
hair loss yeah, he's itching pretty bad even though he's been taking the medicine for the yeast. I guess I'll have to take him back in to the vet next week. Thanks for the reply!!! |
Definately take him back to the vet. he needs to get to the bottom of this . It could also be mange  |
still wondering about hair I took Duke back to the vet and after finishing meds for yeast, bacteria and steroids, everything is healed, and I'm feeding him only food with no corn, wheat or beef. He looks much better, not itching anymore, but hair is extremely thin on his sides and skin on his back and sides is black. Is it supposed to be black? His tummy is normal pink-looking skin. If it's normal to be black, I guess he's ok, just need to know if I'm still dealing with a skin condition. Thanks for all the help! |
I would absolutely get him tested for mange!! It has been so common lately - AND - so underdiagnosed, sadly. :( |
