Feet Mites After the last two years of visiting Vets trying to cure what the Doctors says are mites on her feet, she still chews her feet raw, everybody has a $500.00 solution, but none work, I'm at my witts end, so I thought I would find a forum the caters to Yorkies and try and get some opinions of what to do, I've tried several Vets, but I still have no solution, I'm not blaming them, but I feel so bad for my dog, she can hardly walk her feet are so tender from chewing, I can't be the only person with a Yorkie that has this problem, I am asking for help:animal-pa Thanks in advance junodale |
Did the vet do testing and determined that it is mites? |

I am sorry for what you and your baby are going through, and I'm sure you'll find answers to many of your questions. Now, could it be allergies, either to the food she eats, or may be environmental? do you have carpets? perhaps something in the carpet, maybe the cleaners you use. |
Mites and Mange in dogs read this - you may want a skin scraping done to determine if you really have this problem - if so - it needs to be treated ASAP |
Chachi had mites and had to have dips. The treatment for it wasnt cheap it was about $250 but youve got to do it or the dog can get so bad it has to be put to sleep |
Wow I'm so sorry to hear that. My lil one licks her paws when her nails are long. But for our next visit to the vet I will def have them look into that just to be on the safe side. |
feet mites Thanks for all the replies, to answer a couple of questions that were posted. Yes the Vet tested for mites a year ago, I'm not totally sure about the allergies, I don't think so and I do not have any carpet in the house all tile, I'm in south Florida, we like tile, I will read through the mite web site that was sent by red98vett, thanks for the help, keep the suggestions coming junodale:) |
It looks like you've received some GREAT advice from folks who have already dealt with this problem - so I hope you find a solution in there. Also, it's important that you're feeding a highly nutritious diet right now so 1) he can heal and 2) so that he's not experiencing food allergies, which causes them further biting/chewing of the paws. What are you feeding? |
I am sooo sorry to hear about your dog's problem. How painful and horrible for her. I am not very experienced with Yorkies, but I am VERY experienced with dogs and wildlife. If this is truly a mite issue, please start your dog on a Heartworm pill containing Ivomec. Heartgard Plus contains it, also Revolution and Interceptor. There may be other brands too. If it is truly mites causing her problem, the Ivomec (Ivermectin) will CURE her in one dose. I am shocked your vet did not recommend this from the start. So often vets will go the expensive route for a cure, rather than the simple EASY way (and inexpensive). The cure for mites is so easy. I have used Ivomec for over 20 years on animals as small as squirrels, and it is safe and effective. PLEASE give it a try. If the Ivomec doesn't cure your dog in one (oral) dose, then it isn't mites causing the problems. I would think it would more likely be caused from allergies. Best of luck to you and please give the Ivomec a try. |
I personally know two dogs (not yorkies) who are allergic to grass. Both of them will chew their feet like mad. The solution one person is using...her dogs wears booties outside. The other allows his on the grass but immediately after coming in the house...he uses medicated wipes between his toes and paw pads. He also gets a dose of benedryll daily. My mother's dog picked up mites in her feet from goose poop left in their yard. The problem wasn't so much the vet couldn't cure it...she would get re-infested. Once the geese were eliminated....she no longer had a problem. |
You also might request a scraping between her toes. Charlie had yeast and when he becomes itchy, I bath him in a prescription shampoo. The sample will show yeast, and scraping will definitely show mites. Good luck. Deborah |
PS If it is mites, then your pup shouldn't receive prednisone or any cortisone meds because this drug activates the mites. |
See, i never heard of it and i am thankfull in this place i am getting educated. Good luck on the responses. I hope you find the solution. Sorry i am not of any help but keeping the thread going ... hopefully you can get this resolved once for all. |
feet mites WHOA!! Latte had Ivermectin shots about a year ago. I didn't know I could just give her Heartgard Plus. Also, she take a teensie bit of cortisone for allergies and SHE LICKS HER PAWS A LOT!! It may be mites and the coritsone is making it worse, right? I'm calling the vet supply right now and checking on the Heartgard Plus. (I no longer think it's food allergies, because she is mainly a fish and sweet potato gal with a little Blue Buffalo fishy food.) |
