Bernie was neutered yesterday... ...and he doesn't feel good today. Also he had four teeth pulled that had really long roots on them. I know his mouth hurts too. Isn't it awful when they just stand at your feet and whine at you, like please Mommie, do something for me. So, I gave him a little pain pill that does absolutely nothing for him. And I hold him and rub his belly. I just wish I could do more for him. I feel so useless to him. The vet won't give him anything more than what is the equivalent of motrin to us. Anyone have any suggestions to help get my baby feeling better? |
Awwww feel better real soon Bernie. He should feel much better by tomorrow just don't let him jump around or on and off furniture. He meds should help his poor mouth. Buddy was fine the next day but he didn't have teeth removed. I am sure that's what is bothering him. Keep him quiet if you can. Wishing you a better tomorrow Bernie, Hugs, |
Honestly, as long as your pup doesn't have any underlying disease that makes pain meds dangerous, if your vet won't prescribe something better I'd find a new one. Surgery is extremely painful and I just don't go for the, "If they are in pain they won't jump and hurt themselves" thing. Pain meds can make them tired which is a good thing and I don't think a doctor would withhold meds from a child to keep them calm. It just isn't right. What is he on? What is the vets excuse for not using an NSAID? When Ellie had oral surgery (9 adult teeth pulled) it was before we knew she had a liver issue and she was on an NSAID for that (Metacam). |
AAAWW poor baby. Hope you feel better soon Bernie. He will be back to his normal self sooner than you think. When I had Timmy done and brought him home he thought that nothing had ever happened, he also had 4 of his baby canines removed. Sending lots of kisses to Bernie:animal36 |
awww poor Bernie, I hope he feels better soon. |
Ah....poor Bernie. :( I hope your mouth feels better soon for you. To me, that's probably what's bothering him yet. Feel better soon, Bernie. :getwell::aimeeyork |
Baxter was on Metacam too. It seemed to really help. He had his dewclaws removed which bothered him more than the neutering. Hope Bernie feels better soon. |

When I had Bella spayed they took out 4 baby canines and microchipped her. She really didn't care about being fixed, but her teeth bothered her really bad. The vet was reluctant to prescribe painkillers because in his experience dogs without them healed faster (moving around, but not over doing it). The first day she was miserable, then the next day she got a little better. After 3 or 4 days, she was back to normal. You can try giving him really cold water (I wouldn't suggest ice because it might be too tough on his gums) it might help numb the area so he can feel a little relief. You can also get a damp wash cloth and freeze it for him to chew on, that's what Bella liked. It was soft and felt good for her. |
Wonderful washcloth idea. I'm going to do that when I get home. I wish I had seen this last night. Thanks Quote:

That poor little thing. I know what it's like to watch your baby suffer and not know what to do about it. I'm sure there has to be something the Vet. can give him to help with the pain. Maybe call and find out. |
How's Bernie today? :) I did ask my vet for an actual pain killer (ie, prescription level) for Marcel when he had his 7 teeth pulled. I was really clear with her that I didn't want him feeling mouth pain - and she was in full agreement. She gave me meds to give 2-3x a day for pain - for I think the first 5 days after the surgery. Usually vets are very open to pain managment bc pain is not good for healing - if they're not open to it, I'd probably wonder about that. (I could call that vet for you - I mean, I DO have PMS right now!) :D |
