Luxating Patellas Hello, I'm new to yorkie talk. We have a precious little yorkie named Padre who is a total joy in our lives! We just got back from his annual vet check-up and found out that his two back legs have luxating patellas. I just wanted to see if anyone had any dietary suggestions, supplements, exercises, restrictions,etc..that they recommend to keep our little ones as happy and healthy as possible! I look forward to hearing from you all! |
WELCOME to YT> Many of us on here are dealing with LP.. did they tell you the grade (1,2 3 or 4?). A great suppliement that many on here are trying is called Cosequin. It is a glucosamine chondriotin suppliment that will help strengthen his joints. LP can not be reversed but the progression can be slowed down. Also walks are GREAT for strengthening the muscles around the knee cap and with layla I do hydrotherapy- which is just swimming in the bath tub :p i fill it up and hold her in it and she paddles for 5-10 min. If you search Luxating Patella on here you'll see MANY stories of LP and see how those who have had the surgery have done. |
thank you, that's reassuring and helpful! I've already tried the "hydrotherapy" and we always take lots of walks which he loves! |
Well living in San Fran you are bound to be able to do what my vet suggested for Bella!! He suggested walking upHILL (know for a fact you can find one or two in SF Hee hee). he said it will strengthen the anatomy around the knee...tighten it up so it doesnt slip! Bella no longer has an issue (knock on wood) She also spends some time in the pool. Also keeping good weight control will take pressure off the joints. I keep Bella lean. Vet said you should be able to feel the ribs but not see them. Good luck with your baby!!;) |
