Help!!! Keoki got heatstroke!!!! I walked Keoki today and didn't realize it was too hot for him- we normally go on long walks but today we went on a little bit longer one. I gave him water and he drank a whole cup and a half- I then put him in his bag and he threw up ( he has never thrown up before ). I started walking him and he fell over and couldn't get up!!!! I was sooo scared and ran home with him- the same thing happened at home ( falling over )- I tried to give him maple syrup and then ran him over to the vet where i found out he had heatsroke. The vet wondered if he could have been stung by a bee because he says his electrolytes concern him and I need to watch him for the next 2 hours!!!! I feel so bad and am worried about him- He is just laying down, not hungry and drooling ALOT- If anyone has suggestions let me know. I learned my lesson about walking him too long:( |
First off only walk him in the early mornings or evenings when there is no sunshine. I never walk mine in the sun. We take the stroller if we go shopping when it's sunny and warm. Mine are not use to warm weather at all, so they get hot so easily. I'm sorry your baby is sick. That could have killed him. Since he's still ok, I'm sure he will make it. Scary thing heat stroke. |
I had a similar experience where Hot Rod and I went for our usual walk and he threw up way later in the afternoon. I called the vet and they gave me a couple of options and I chose to watch him at home for that afternoon. He didn't get to the point of falling down. Others on yt told me that throwing up was one of the first signs of heatstroke. We only go out for potty breaks when it is really hot. We do our walks in the am or pm now. Maybe try putting him on a cold wet towel to help his body temp. I would also try to wet him down. Do not put ice cold water, just cool to tepid water. I hope your little one is okay. |
Thank you !!! I had no idea about heatstroke but he is sleeping and still not doing great- I feel so guilty but had no idea- I will never walk him for long periods in the afternoon ever again!!! A.m. or p.m. and that is it!!!! I appreciate the tips. |
I am so sorry to hear about your baby. My real hairy pom got heatstroke from the groomers, She had a new person helping her, when I pixked her up she was breathing really strange and looked panicked. I headed right over to the vet where they took herin put her on a cooling pad in an oyxgen chamber. I waited for her and after 2 hours she was fine. It sounds like your baby was treated in time and should be ok. |
oh so sorry to hear Keoke had heatstroke...we sure hope he will be ok...sending lots of hugs your way... |
There is also a vest you can buy for him that is a "cooling vest". You soak it in water, wring it out and put it on them and it will maintain the coll temperature for several hours. Jeni at Sassy Pup sells them..... |
oh no!!! wat a scare that must have been. its a good thing u got him to the vet fast. hugs and prayers going ur way so he heals faster. i worry about taking mine out in the day too. if they "need" to poop i only keep them on my block. im not risking this crazy heat |
Thank you so much everyone :) Keoki is like his old self again but what a scare!!!! After I gave him the glycemic stuff the vet gave me it took a few hours but he is so much better. I did learn a good lesson today- I never knew dogs could get heat stroke but I will be more than cautious from now on- I hope if anything I can help someone else with this scare :) I appreciate everyones well wishes :) |
I am glad he is doing fine now. Yes they can get heatstroke very easily. The scary thing about it is that they can die, or it can cause brain damage. I do not let Suzi go out right much because it has been way too hot. Remeber that A dogs normal body temerature is 101' . |
So thankful he is alright. My maltese had a heat stroke that caused brain damage," the Vet thought", but had to put him to sleep. One of the worst days of my life. He was 16 so I have lots of memories of that baby. |
Glad your baby is doing much better today. That must have been scary. I always worry when walking Buddy. He needs walks 4x daily and when it's so very hot out I try and make it fast. He plops on the cold marble floor when we get back inside. I am so happy things worked out for him and he's back to normal. Stay cool:cool: |
MY Papillion got heat stroke camping one time and I called our vet from the camp site. She said use a spray bottle with ice water and spray her to keep her wet and give her warm not hot or cold water to drink. It worked and our camping trip still had 4 days and she stayed fine in 106 degree weather! |
