Migrating Pins...HELP!! Hi everyone, I posted here recently about Biff's knee issues. I took him to the surgeon today to have his LP surgery checked to make sure that that's not the cause of his limping/hopping. Turns out the pins that they put in when they did the surgery have started to move around. They said that they can be taken out (for a small fortune of course - 800 on top of the 2500 we already paid for the surgery). I opted to see if maybe they shift over the next few weeks into a more comfortable position before jumping into another surgery. Has anyone had issues with shifting pins? If so...do you have any advice, did I make the right decision? I don't want to put him through more surgeries than necessary and I certainly don't want to spend 800 more dollars if that's not necessary either. I'd appreciate any suggestions, advice, comments that you all have. Thanks!! |
I wish I knew more about this, but my babies haven't had this surgery. Many folks have babies who have had the surgery - so I know they'll chime in to help. Best of luck! :) |
$800 - Are they on crack  That doesn't seem right  - Roxy had 1 pin migrate, it actually was causing pain to her and it formed a cyst the size of a hazelnut. The surgeon removed the pin: Anesthesia $58 and Radiographs $115 = $173.00 Removal is no big deal - it took about 30 mins. from drop off to pick up. I would fight with them, you just spent $2500 and now they want another $800  Did they give you an itemized quote? I am curious as to what the 'surgeons fee' is - I would be very upset :( |
I really am upset. They even said that 800 was on the conservative side...meaning they were giving me a break by only charging that much. Oh and on top of it they never mentioned that the pins might need to be removed due to pain. It would have been nice to know that there is a typical surgery following the LP surgery to remove these pins. He's on pain meds right now and hasn't hobbled on it all day today and has much more pep in his step. The surgery person that I talked to thought that maybe since they were migrating they might migrate to a location that wasn't painful. Does that sound right? |
pins and plates can migrate, its something that just happens sometimes. They are foreign objects in your dogs body. Yes they need to come out. I believe the price. They are still doing surgery on your dog. they need to open the knee back up to find the pins. Your dog gets all the same monitoring systems and care that they got during the original surgery. Sometimes the pins migrate outward which is why it is sometimes cheaper. Sometimes they don't even have to be under anesthesia, just a sedative. Your dogs must be in deeper so they can't do that. |

But listen to Kellie, she works with an Ortho Surgeon, and it might be so costly b/c they have to go in deep as she says. So sorry he has to go through more, but once this final pin removal and when he has completely healed, he'll be brand new, you will actually be able to see the difference in him from when he had LP to now it being fixed!
