Thank you all again for your help ... it is so nice to know that there is a place I can come to get great advice from such empathetic, wonderful people! We just back from the vet. She said the dreaded words I haven't even wanted to pronounce and wants to run some tests to rule out liver shunt. They pulled blood today to do a full blood panel. If nothing shows up in his blood, she wants to go ahead and do the bile acid test. I made it to the car before I burst into tears. With the move and everything that is going on, this is the LAST thing either Oscar or I needed. Please hope and pray that it was just blood sugar. He has absolutely no symptoms of liver shunt whatsoever, except for the listlessness thing today. He just ate and is more insanely hyper than ever. His labs will be back tomorow ... I'm crossing my fingers :( |

Well i am happy to hear your vet recommended a bile acid :) Sounds pretty on the ball! I was the EXACT same way....SO SCARED thats why having this test will rule out all possibilites of a shunt. If he is acting fine after he eats then odds are in your favor. Thats when most shunts become symptomatic. Hypo and shunt can act a lot alike but the major difference is how they act after they eat. If he is happy playing after eating then sounds like a positive thing :) I will pray your results come back good and please stay positive, your doing the best thing for him. Its hard not to assume the worst, I know I did and when i got those bile acid results....WOW he was perfect! just a lil low blood sugar....ALL my questions were answered. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the prayers and best wishes. The one thing giving me hope is that he is eating so much, and is so active afterward. (He has also gained an entire pound a week for the last couple weeks. :eek:) I am happy that the vet wants to go ahead and do the tests ... the money is definitely worth the peace of mind. I'll keep in touch with the results. |

The vet called today with the results from Oscar's blood work and thankfully nothing indicated liver shunt. His ALT/AST/BUN levels were just fine, as were his triglycerides and glucose. His muscle enzymes were slightly elevated which the vet said could indicate some sort of seizure activity, although at this point she's attributed it to his high energy level. He was also very slightly anemic, which she also thought might be due to the fact that he is growing so quickly. At this point she wants me to watch him carefully. I'm planning on having him neutered in a couple months ... if he doesn't exhibit any off behavior before then, she has suggested doing another blood panel alongside the bile acid test as part of his pre-surgery labwork. If he has another one of these episodes before then, she wants me to go ahead and do the bile acid sooner. I'm relieved ... not 100% relieved, but things are looking better. Great news on the blood work.:) I think it would be best to run the bile acid test as soon as possible though. Liver enzymes don't always elevate with liver shunt or MVD. The liver usually has to be significantly damaged for the enzymes to go up. While it is very possibly hypo if the corn syrup is helping, there are enough symptoms of ls to get him tested. Hyperactivity can be normal but there are at least a few reports of it being related to ls. Listlessness is not normal unless it only happened when his sugar dropped. I just wouldn't be totally convined that it is hypo since he had no other problems before this and he had eaten a couple hours before. |
