Anyone had experience with Mometamax? Darwin was diagnosed with a yeast/bacterial ear infection this morning at the vet's, and they gave us mometamax to take home. Vet says to use it for 10 days, but the box says to administer it for 7 days...should I go 7 days or 10 days, I don't want to over medicate, and the other issue is, I'll be home for the next 7 days, but then my friend is coming over to puppy sit for me b/c I have to travel for a business trip, and I'm worried about allowing someone else to administer the antibiotic. Do you think 7 days will do the job? |
I don't have experience with that med but have used Otomax on Ellie. I always just do what the vet says because they have experience in knowing how long it takes, so I'd do it for 10. If Darwin is cooperative, your friend should be able to do it. |
Is the ears hard and crusty on the tips or edges? I am curious, because Dolly has hard crusty sores on her ears, and the vet said either bacterial or stress. Sent us home with a scrub, and a spray to do for 7 days.. |
I would absolutely follow the directions given by the vet. Not taking the full round of antibiotics can be more harmful because if all of the bad bacteria are not killed, they can mutate, and you can end up with a "superbug." They will learn to become resistant to that antibiotic which will cause problems if your baby needs those antibiotics in the future. I would also highly suggest that you put your baby on probiotics. Not only is it beneficial for those who get yeast infections, it also replenishes the friendly flora or good bacteria that the antibiotics kill.... |
Yorkieluv - what kind of probiotics? Is human yogurt ok? I'm not sure what type to buy and how much to give...any advice? |
I'm not sure if I'm putting the ear drops in right, I stick it all the way in his ear and squeeze, but after a couple hours, it almost seems like most of it has made its way out of the ear and is now making his fur greasy... |

As long as you think you are getting it in at first, it is okay even if the outside is wet later.:) Ellie's fur gets very greasy when we use those kinds of meds also. If you are doing it exactly how the vet showed you, I wouldn't worry. |
