My Yorkie has a fracture..any advice would be welcomed Hello, I am new to this site and I am so glad that I found it! My 5mo old baby Dallas jumped out of my arms because he got so excited when he saw me pick up the leash. When he fell to the floor he yelped & howled like I have never heard him do before. I took him to the my vet ($200) for xrays ( he has 2 fractures in his hind leg), medicine, office visit & (because the doctor wasn't sure about the xray, she had to sent it out to a specialist $77). I called the specialist and it's $140 just for the office visit so I can imagine what the surgery will cost! Although the vet did give me a copy of the xray's, I'm sure I will not be able to afford the surgery. But I can't stand to see him hopping around on 3 legs, although he still is very active and still plays with his sister Roxi. Do you think he will heal properly if I can't afford the surgery? Should his leg be wrapped in a splint or something? Please help, I am so worried.:( |
Well, no fracture should be left to heal on its own. Depending on the type of fracture, a splint may do or surgery may be necessary. In either case, the longer you wait, the more the leg tries to heal and the bone builds up calcium in its mis-aligned state. I had a little girl that broke her leg last November by stepping in a hole while running. I didn't think it was broke, just sprained, so I waited a few days to go to the vet. Turns out she had broken her leg at the elbow and needed surgery. The surgeon said the waiting wouldn't affect how she healed but made his job harder as he had to scrape the scar tissue away that was building up. She is fine now but I had to treat her like glass, keeping her very still, for 8 weeks (not easy with a 5 month old puppy). The surgery was $1000 but today she is fine. I didn't have the money either so I had to use a credit card. Please follow your doctor's advice and don't let him just try to heal. You should also be limiting his activity now that you know it's broken until you see the specialist. Sorry to hear about your baby but he really needs to be taken care of ASAP. |
If it heals wrong he will have problems all his life and puppies heal really fast. If you wait until it heals wrong, it will cost you more to get it fixed. My puppy has a fracture and his cast comes off Friday. It will be just over 2 weeks and will be completely healed. |
leg Go to the human society, animal shelter and ask for help...some places are very good to help or suggest vets who will accept payments. Your Yorkie must have treatment..not to do so, is animal abuse..have you ever watched the Animal planet shows where the pet owner neglected to correct a serious health problem, broken bones and they were arrested..? |
Everyone has given good advice. Please don't put it off. It will be more costly down the road and she will suffer espically as she ages. My toy schnauzer broke her back leg in 2places falling off the bed. She went to surgery, wore a cast for about 8wks. and has done fine ever since. Believe me it will be worth it in the long run. |
Ahhh...honey...you can not let this go untreated. As others have stated this would be considered neglect/abuse. If you can not possibly afford his vet care, Please contact a Yorkie Rescue in your area, and you may have to surrender him, as they would be able to raise the funds needed to care for his injuries. :( http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ie-rescue.html |

:thumbup: It will cost you more in the long run. My cousin left her dogs broken leg untreated and eventually had the surgery done and it cost her lots of $$$$$ Like TLC said if you cannot afford it please find it in your heart to surrender him to a rescue. I know its hard but please think of whats best for him. This is why my furkids have their own savings account and I never touch their money. I'm doing this because one of my girl has LP (bad knees) and I want to be prepared for surgery in case she needs it. |
I have a friend who adopted a rescue Min Pin and the original owners didn't get medical help for her broken leg and they had to amputate it because it refused in a weird way and was causing the dog much pain. Do what is right for your baby, get the leg fixed. There is also a plan called Care Credit that will loan you money for medical care. Good luck to you and your baby! |
Yorkie Fracture Thank you all for your advise on my Dallas leg injury. Everyone was very helpful:) And for those of you who think I would let my precious baby go untreated, that would never happen..I LOVE my kids too much!:):aimeeyork. Thanks again to all!!:yorkiesar |

Great! Please keep us updated. He might not even need the surgery. Just see what your vet has to say and take it from there. Like another member said there is also Care Credit (credit card) and after you charge X amount of money there is no interest for X amount of time. I also have this for our family and furkids too and never had a problem. BTW can't wait to see pics of your baby! |
Just checking for an update. What did the vet say? :) Hoping for the best! |
Someone here suggested Care Credit for me. I applied for it for Sammy's surgery. It's like a credit card for pet expenses and other expenses too. you could ask your vet if they accept that. You get 0% interst. |
banjo had a bone chip and they had to put pins in- I went to the Vet School near by- they have payment plans options- and I think you could find a vet with that option if you looked around! Or try a Vet School if you have one near enough! Animal shelters would know who is good and who can help out! Good luck! |
I am very sorry your baby has fractures. MAybe you could get on a payment plan to help with the costs. I know it is very expensive when out animals get hurt, however, it is the best thing to go through with the costly vet bills . :aimeeyork |
Please keep us updated. My Yorkie fractured her front leg when my little boy accidentily dropped her. They made her a splint. |
