Hookworm questions Baxter has hookworms again. This is the third time and he is only 7 months old. The vet keeps saying it is from fleas but Baxter does not have fleas. He has had one flea on him the whole time we have had him. Now ticks is another matter. Does anyone know if they can come from ticks? We live in the country and have another outside dog. I treat him when I treat Bax for the hookworms so that there won't be any sharing of the worms. I just don't know what to do. He does occasionally have a tick on him and last week he got in some seed ticks and that was a nightmare. Fortunately those are all gone. I just feel so sorry for the little fellow to keep having this problem. It i amazing how much it takes out of him. He is usually wild and he is very calm when he has them. I prefer the calm but NOT at the cost of him having worms! Any suggestions will be welcome. I do put the Frontline on him to keep fleas off but trust me when I say he has none. He sleeps with me and we make extra sure no fleas. That's how I found the seed ticks, checking for fleas. |
Hookworms do not come from ingesting fleas....those would be tapeworms. Hookworms can be transmitted from the mother OR since you live in the country...it's more likely Baxter is getting them from coming in contact with the larve in the ground. The eggs are laid in their digestive tract then released in poop...then develop into larve. The larve can penetrate the skin directly through the feet, belly or whatever part of the skin is touching the ground. Another way to gain entry is to be present in soil that is licked and swallowed by the the dog when it licks himself. Btw, and I'm sorry for this ewww factor...but it's possible for YOU to get hookworms from him. |
Well I can't believe I wrote that whole post with the wrong worm. It is tapeworms that Baxter has. How stupid am I? |

I have no idea about ticks and tapeworms. There is more than just 1 type. One is found from fleas and another found in rabbits. Dogs get those two...there's another that cats get from mice. They would eat the bodies of the rabbit or mice to catch tapeworms though. I do know he doesn't have to eat a LOT of fleas....one infected flea is enough. |
My 7 month old Mini Schnauzer keeps getting tape worms. We have to keep going after a pill from the vet. Giz has had no problem, thank goodness. |
Tapeworms usually come from fleas. What flea treatment do you use? Another possibility is that all the tapeworms weren't killed the first time. Here is a ton of information on tapeworms: The Tapeworm Page |
If he is getting ticks I would assume your Frontline is not working for some reason, it should protect him from fleas and ticks. Possibly it is getting washed off? We have had no trouble with Frontline but I would talk to your vet about maybe trying something else. I know there is a pill they can take for fleas and ticks (it starts with a c), maybe that would work better for you. |
Where are you getting your Frontline? There are a lot of counterfeit products on the market at the retail level. A member on another forum got counterfeit Frontline from Petedge. The only safe way to buy flea products are from your vet or a licensed online pharmacy. Here is some information on counterfeits from the EPA: EPA: Pesticides - Counterfeit Pesticide Products for Dogs and Cats EPA orders retailers to stop sales of counterfeit flea and tick products for pets - April 1, 2004 |
You could get the Iverheart Max, that protects against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, & tapeworms & around here it's cheaper than the Heartguard too. |
