Legg-Perthes - Walking Question For Those Who've Been Through It My dog had FHO surgery on Thursday for Legg-Perthes. For those who've been through this, how long did it take for your Yorkie to start using the leg that was affected. I don't mean 100% utilization, I mean just putting it down and trying to walk on it. My guy is still keeping it in the air most of the time when walking. Thank you. |

Hi, I have found that it varies with the dog, and maybe the degree of the surgery/hip...I just fostered a dog who had that operation and she used her leg right away... I currently have a foster who just had the surgery on Wed and he is still not using his leg... Was he holding the leg up before the operation? My current foster was..so I think some of it is habit too...I am taking him for slow walks trying to get him to put some pressure on the leg..when he moves faster he automatically puts it right up.... Does he put it down when he is standing? |

On of mine that held it up before the surgery did hold it up for a bit after the surgery too like 3 or 4 days then I saw improvement.. My vet also said for some it could be habit and to take them on very slow leash walks to try and get them to walk and put pressure on it... when they move fast I notice it goes right up... Maisy seemed a little swollen a couple days after the surgery and I was afraid she had hurt herself...but when I took her to the vet she was fine and right on track...however she put her leg down fairly quick... Toby (who I have now) his area does look alittle swollen... he has staples where Maisy had glue... different vets... Did they give you any pain meds? I have fostered 5 dogs that have had this surgery 3 walked on it right away and two (including the one I have no) did not walk on it right away..and took about a week to see them walking.. Toby my current foster is scheduled to have his second one done in 12 days...so we will see...they are suppose to have a failry quick recovery time I know your frustration because with this surgery they are suppose to be using the leg to build up muscle mass... |
My little LuLu had the same surgery two years ago. It took her about a Month to start walking on all fours. The vet told me I had to make her walk on it. So I started to go for short walks (around the block) and after a few days I would add another block. The first five days she walked on only 3 legs, then eventually she used her leg. Now she walks fine and you would never know only if she is walking on pavement. When she is on the grass, she just has a slight limp. Lulu, Bosley Beamer, & Baby Zoey's Mommy |
That is exactly what I am doing with Toby right now, short leashed walks...and I find if I walk real slow he is more apt to put some pressure on it... I also think the degree of damage/detioration of the hip also makes a difference as to how soon they walk on the leg... .. or at least that is what I have seen... those that held the leg up prior to the surgey takes longer for them to walk on after the surgery... Toby had his operation on Wed and is not walking on the leg yet..and I am not worried yet...if he is still not putting any pressure on the leg by Wed which will then be a week..I will be bringing him to the vet to be on the safe side... But yes it is impotant to get them to walk on the leg... |
Yes, the surgeon gave us Medicam and some other pain med. Jay has started putting his leg down tonight to walk. He only does when he is walking, anything faster and it goes up, however, now that it is going down a bit I'm a bit less anxious. I was told to keep his energy down the first week to let things heal then start physical therapy and let him play as much as he feels comfortable. He has tried playing with our older Yorkie, but we've kept his activity minimal to let things heal this first week. This Thursday (1 week) we will start taking him on walks and moving and stretching his leg as well as some swimming. Hopefully there will be a lot of improvement shortly. |
with more walking our yorkie should start using his leg more often. sometimes it takes 1-14 days for them to begin using it. its all very normal. it sounds like you are doing an excellent job with his recovery! |
