Coccidia!!!! Captain Jack gave me the scare of my life this morning! When I got up this morning he was having diarrhea with blood in it....so of course I freaked out! I carried him to the vet as soon as they opened. His vet said that it is coccidia and that it is quite common. It is due to stress. So now we are back home and he has medicine for it. But I am getting his new sister today and they have to stay apart for 10 days!!! So I am getting him settled then I am off to walmart to buy more puppy gates. I guess that I will quarantine him in the kitchen??? Anyone else got any ideas??? |
Ok...I just talked to the breeder that I am getting our new little girl from and this is what she told me. My vet gave me albon for Captain Jack. She told me that it is a good idea to keep them seperate, but that I could still transmit coccidea to my new baby just by walking through the kitchen(where he is at) and then walking through the den where she will be.(it can be transfered on my shoes) She said that she will send some amprolium home with me. I put it in her water and it is a treatment for the coccidea. I need to treat her as a preventative. Have you guys ever had any experience with this???? |
Coccidia can be very dangerous. Make sure that you don't miss any doses of the meds and clean all areas very well. Also, please make sure that your baby is eating regularly and not missing any meals. Your baby should be eating small frequent meals. When my baby had coccidia, he was sooo sick and he didn't want any food. We had to force feed him a little bit of food every couple of hours. He had a really bad case of coccidia, and it was really hard on him. |
I would probably go ahead and treat the sister just for precaution..If it was mine I would..:) |
Can you leave sister at the breeders until big brother is all better? Why risk it? |

Also what could have caused him to get the stress or what ever that caused it? |
Ugh ... I've been dealing with the same sickness for the last 10 days, and am pretty much convinced it's the devil. I agree that it would be best if sister could stay at the breeder's until the infection is gone. My Yorkie puppy passed the infection on to our adult German Spitz, and now we're dealing with an epidemic. All it takes is one microscopic cyst to infect another dog. If you decide to bring home the other little one, definitely keep them completely separated and disinfect everything frequently with diluted bleach water. Right now our dogs are even "going" on different lawns, because apparently the coccidia cysts can live in the poop outside for a month. Good luck! Hope your little one feels better soon ... and I feel your pain! |
Sorry to hear that. When I brought Cali home she had it and was on the Albon. Fortunately she didn't pass it on to my pom, but she did pass on kennel cough. I would either leave the new puppy at the breeders or get her on Albon right away. Good luck |
Teddi's on his last dose of meds Teddi had/has a Coccidia infection too! One day he pooped inside the house and I noticed some blood in his poop! :( Luckily my bf was able to take him to the vet as soon as they opened that day. The vet gave him an injection, plus told us to give him this liquid med for the nasty protozoan and small doses of this pill for diarrhea daily during one of his meals. We had to feed him plain boiled chicken and rice for a few days. He didn't poop for the first 2 days but now he poops more regularly and no blood. Although I found him eating some of his poop yesterday. We're gonna take him back to the vet for another checkup. Hopefully there'll be good news...! |
YOu need to bleach the floors and stuff and clean and bleach food and water bowl ever day till it is clear then redue every thing again toys crates bleach everything... trust me lot of work but you just have to keep up with it good luck:aimeeyork |
I would wait until your dog is done with the albon to bring the new puppy home. I would still treat the new puppy with Albon too after coming to your home. Cocci is a mess. Once you dog has it, it will always have it in their system. The meds don't get rid of it , it just helps prevent/treat for infection. It can live dormant in the dog, and then with stress ,becomes active, and cause the stool problems. So, when you bring the new pup home , cocci dog could get it again because of the excitement of the new pup. I would treat them both for 10 days if it were me. |
