I am so upset, i dont know what to do!! I am sooo upset right now!! i am cryin as i type this i just feel soooo down!! Lets go from the start.... About 2 or maybe even 3 months ago i was sat typing on yorkietalk (on my old nick) and i heard this ticking sound i turned around and Bailey is having a fit in Leahs bed (golden lab's bed) i pick him up and he is foaming from the mouth i was really upset didnt know what was happening and i burst out cryin and phoned the vet!! i took him straight there (its like 2mins from my house) and the vet just told me to keep an eye on him :( 2days later he had another i was more calm this time and took him to the vet again where they took blood samples and did liver tests on him they all came back fine which was good news. I take him to the vet after EVERY fit the same day to get checked out. Then about 2weeks later he had another fit and the vet told again to keep an eye on him and then 2 weeks after that he had ANOTHER FIT:eek:!!!! i was so upset its horrible to see my little baby go through this, when he comes around he looks at me his ears back like he has done something wrong it kills me!!! It seemed to be every 2 weeks that he was having a fit and after every fit he was going to potty straight away (not during) I then started work and he went about 1 month with out a fit and i was so happy :) i thought i would know if he had, had a fit as he wud have messed in the house but everytime i came home there was nothin, great i thought he has grown out of them. Then about a week ago he had ANOTHER fit i was so upset not only that but he never messed at all so now i am wondering if he has had any when i have been to work. Just now as i am on yorkietalk i head this banging from the kitchen and he is in his bed fitting again he seems to be thrashing around more than he did the first fit, it only lasts about 15- 20secs but when he came round and looked at me all confused his little ears back thinking that he did something wrong, i just burst out crying and i cant stop. :(:( I phoned up my vet and have an appointment at 4:30 this afternoon and i am demanding he does something or puts him on tablets or anything i cant let my baby go through this again. Its horrible i cant stop crying:( i hate to see it and just when i thought he was ok and then it happened again infront of me. i just feel like if he had a fit when i was at work why didnt i know!!! i have let it go on for so long with out demanding the vet does more just letting him keep saying to me keep an eye on him! i feel a horrible mum!! i am demanding more is done 2day :( grrr i dunno what to do i just feel so helpless. is anyone else going through this?? I feel so alone about how i feel and that no one really knows how it feels when your baby is going through this, i am so scared he will die from one of the fits and i dont know what to do, its horrible!! |
If he is having these at regular intervals, it is possible he may need to be treated for epilepsy. There are a few on here who have had that experience. I'm not sure how they were diagnosed, but they are on anti-seizure medication. Good luck to you and your little guy. |

This sounds like epilepsy and it could possibly be taken care of very easily w/ an anti-seizure medication. I don't know if they do EEGs on dogs - but they may just put him on the meds due to the symptoms. Please keep us posted. This must be so scary for you. |
If your vet does not run test or do something, I would find another vet. Your baby should not have to continually go through this if he can be helped, and the vet needs to find out what is wrong. This has to be so upsetting for you as well as you puppy, and I hope they find out what is wrong and get him on meds to help. Sincerely kay |
Can you possibly take him to another vet? I'm not sure why your vet just advised you to keep an eye on him when there is clearly something wrong. How scary it must be for you to see him have fits and not be able to do anything. Poor little man. Give him a lot of hugs in the meantime and please keep us posted. |
Personally it looks like time to find another vet. Seizures are a symptom...not a disease. A cause really needs to be determined so he can be properly treated. Good luck... |
yes, you need a second opinion - you need someone who will be aggressive about testing and finding the appropriate treatment. do you have a university with a vet school near you or a specialist? You need to do some searching in your area. I am so sorry for you hon. Hugs for you  |
I know its hard to change when your vet is that close. Mine is too, about 3 or 4 min. away. But, if he wasn't doing anything for this baby I would be finding another vet that would be concerned enough to help and get him on some medication. Good luck. |
I agree with everyone, you need to find another vet.. |
Poor Bailey. Hope he gets better soon. |
Ok so Bailey just went to the vet again he said ''to keep an eye on it and if he has another in 2weeks go back and see him'' i am so mad and upset i am not happy at all!! This is just not good enough, what if he dont have another for 3 weeks!!! i am thinking going to look for another vet!! :( the problem is i am sooo protective over my dogs and this is my 3rd vet in my area because with my other dog (leah) i did not feel the care was up to standard at the other two vets we took her too so we moved 3 times and ended up liking this vet. He has been really good in EVERY other way and i like the practice, but i do feel the care they are giving bailey at he moment is just not good enough!!! i am sooo upset i cant stop cryin i dont know what to do, move vet AGAIN and travel 30min drive to the next one or wait and see if he has another fit like instructed! ahhh i am so upset this is just not fair :(:(:(:( |
My Lady has been epileptic for nine years so I know more than I'd like to about the disease. How old is Bailey? True epilepsy in a dog under one year old is extremely unusual. Seizures are usually a symptom of an underlying disease like a liver shunt, hydrocephalus, hypoglycemia, etc. What tests did your vet do? Simple bloodwork often won't reveal liver disease. A bile acids test is essential for any dog who exhibits any signs of liver disease. A thyroid panel is also necessary as thyroid imbalances can also cause seizures. If all the test come back negative and your vet is convinced that Bailey is epileptic, he needs to get on seizure medication asap. He is having seizures too often not to. "Kindling" is a phenomenon where the brain actually learns to have seizures by having seizures. Every time Bailey has a seizure, his brain rewires itself to make a path so it is easier to have the next seizure. This leads to more frequent seizures and eventually cluster seizures which can be very dangerous. Kindling is when the seizure focus in the brain develops strong enough pathways that it makes it easier for the seizure to occur -- almost as if the brain "learns" to seizure. It is possible that by controlling seizures quickly through the use of medications that these effects could be stopped and that may lessen the amount or duration of need for seizure control medications. E - Epilepsy and Seizure I strongly suggest you find another vet as soon as possible. |
Bailey is 9 months old :( He had tests on his liver coz they was worried it might be that and they all came back ok :( which i am happy about but they vet aint really said yet what it might be. omg i am so worried now that if any vet does not get it sorted my baby is gonna have a cluster of fits and end up dead :( i'm gonna phone my vets 2morra and tell them i am not happy and if nothing is done that i will be moving vets :( Thank you for letting me know that stuff xxxx |
