Swollen stomach, lethargic - not sure what to do Bubba is not himself tonight, usually begs for a carrot or treat when I come home and instead he has just stayed in his bed. He is lethargic - his stomach seems distended. Gums seems fine. Nose is a bit warm. Do you think I should try some pumpkin?? - which I will have to go buy, and I hate to leave him Any ideas?? |
he hasnt pooped? do you hear his belly gurgling? is he drinking?? VERY important he drinks they dehydrate FAST |
Has he eaten lots of food today? They can "bloat" if they do and it's quite dangerous. Poor baby, I hope he will be OK. The reason I wondered ... my daughter works for a vet and they lost a little Pug this week with the same symptoms. She was a little rescue and the lady "free fed". They did emergency surgery but it was too late. I will be praying for little Bubba. |
I was thinking gas??? Bellas belly was so bloated and they did x ray and she was full of gas from clostridium. Very easily fixed but scary. I gave yogurt with probiotics to help with the gas it worked. |
all he has had is 1/4 a cup of food this morning, with fish oil and water. I'm not sure when the last time he drank. I did see him drink last around noon or 1 pm - but I was gone later, so he could have drank some more I'm not hearing any gurgly noises from his tummy I do have some plain yogurt - do you think I should try that?? I did put him out a bit ago and he did go out and lift his leg |
I wouldn't think that 1/4 cup of food would be too much. Maybe it is just gas. Poor baby ... have you called your vet? |
gosh im not sure....is he used to yogurt? I use it for the probiotics to help digestive tract and bad bacteria getting out of hand. Both mine have had clostridium before so i use it for maintainence. they had very gurggly bellies and gas that ran us from the room! Also runny stool :( maybe he just doesnt feel good. I hope he feels better soon and if he drinks thats a good step. Obviously he hasnt over eaten if you dont free feed so thats good too. The good thing is they dont need to drink a ton to hydrate. wonder what makes his belly upset tho. Bellas was hard as a rock when she had gas...it was sad :( |

Do you think I should try some chicken broth -- I know I probably can't make magic broth as good as you! |

well im not sure....maybe try the broth and see if he will eat it. then if he eats maybe yogurt later. |
ok, I'll go try the broth. He got up and went back into the kitchen - this is just not like him :( Plus I have some herbs my vet gave him when he had an stomach virus before - I'll give him some of that too |
Is his tummy hard or soft (does it give a bit?)? Why don't you palpate around his tummy (push here and there about an inch/inch and a 1/2 inward) - make sure there isn't terrible pain present. Giving yogurt should be fine. Do you have Pepto on hand? If so, give 1/2 tsp now, then another in an hour. :) |

Do you think the yogurt would be a better bet than the broth? No Pepto in the house or anything like that |

he got up when I was spooning the yogurt in his bowl & was anxious to eat. Found a some saltines - a bit stale for my taste but he ate them. He also had 1/4 an Early Comfort tab - maybe I should have started with this - this link says it helps with bloating, abdominal pain -- this is an herb for humans also - my holistic vet prescribed it back in March when Bubba was really sick (and this doesn't seem like that) here's what is in the Early Comfort and what it's for Early Comfort 4oz Kan Herb Company Right after he had all his goodies - he went out to lift his leg again and then came into the family room on his own & got up into his favorite spot - on the back of the couch and went to sleep -- hoping he will be so much better in the morning THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP :ghug: |
ok - he just burped - something he doesn't usually do - so maybe that will help ;) |
hmmm sounds like it was gas. How is he today? |
How is he today? When the stomach is bloated like that and they are lethargic, it is probably best to pull food (if the dog is big enough) unless they are really hungry. Yogurt might settle the stomach (or might not) but beyond that it would seem that adding more could make the problem worse. When you can't get him to drink you can syringe Pedialyte or Pediasure. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus is severe bloat with the stomach turning. It is extremely dangerous but not common in small dogs. Usually with this the dog will be in severe pain, trying to throw up but can't, making weird noses and restless. Bloat (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus) in Dogs |
Another thing that comes to my mind is ascites...Does this dog have liver disease. |
Well, I think he was constipated - this morning when I got up he seemed a bit better, but definitely needed a bath because -- well I'm sure you get the picture. He seemed a lot better after the bath, I gave him some more Early Comfort. He didn't seem that interested in eating -- but then I think I discovered what caused his problem :( Apparently, my dd knocked a sandwich out of the fridge. He must have tore through the baggy and ate the chicken & turkey sandwich with cheese & mayo . (how she didn't notice ) I found the baggy between his bed and the wall -- I'm thinking he ate it all and Roxy must have been outside when this happened because she is acting as normal as possible. He's still a bit sluggish - but better than last night. Thanks again for all the great advice -- hopefully we won't be in this situation again |
Oh, poor little guy!! I'm glad you figured out what caused the problem...Get better soon!! |
pepto Be careful with pepto. It has aspirin in it and may not be good except for short duration. |
