Still not better. Any Ideas? My Nina has had this skin condition since she was 6 months old (she is now two) I posted a while ago and got tons of good advice but nothing has worked; so Im back again hoping for some more. Her skin is dry, flakey, and itchy. It gets to a point where her hair falls out... completely! It used to just be in small patches but now its all over. She looks like shes been majorly neglected! I have taken her to the vet multiple times and he doesnt know what it is or what to do. I have tried changing her food (food allergy) I have tried multiple medications (mites, ring worm, etc.) I am currently using a medicine that keeps it under control but the moment shes off it comes back. I believe its a medicine that controls bacteria and limits the itching. Eventually she will become immune so Im at a loss on what to do now. If anyone has any other ideas or knows any information that would be very much appreciated!! |
My cat did this, they gave her steroid shots and it helped have you tried them? |

I don't have any definite answer for you but will tell you that I give all my dogs flaxseed oil every day. It is excellent for the skin and coat and has many other health benefits. I recently started using it myself and have noticed real benefits in the condition of my skin. Not saying this will fix your girl but it surely could only help. If you decide to try it, use about a teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight daily. You may notice a looser stool at first. If so, you can cut back the dosage just a bit until her body gets used to it. I never had to do this but it can occur. If she tolerates it well, you may be able to give a bit more since her skin is so dry. I just mix it in with the evening meal when I give mine can mixed with dry. Puritan's Pride is a good source for buying it...they have a sale on now. My vet had suggested a steriod shot, he said it would help her itching but that was about it. And he was unsure about giving it to her because shes only 4 pounds. I give her fish oil capsules with her food but thats it because Im afraid to try anything new considering shes only 4 lbs I dont want to give her too much of anything. Thank you!! so much for all the advice. It means alot to me, Im just hoping I can find something to make this better! Its been like this for over a year now and I just dont know what else to do. Any more advice or information will be appreciated. Thanks again! |
Well, that was my one suggestion. I will say that I've taken fish oil in the past and never noticed any real benefit to it though I'm sure it must have done some good. With the flaxseed oil, however, I noticed a change within about 2 weeks. The reason for either of these oils it to get the omega fatty acids. There are 3 types....Omega 3, 6 and 9. Fish oils can vary greatly as to the proportion of each type in it. The body needs different ratios of each. Flaxseed oil contains the parent molecule that all 3 types of omega acids are derived from. It is my understanding that the body determines how the flaxseed oil molecule is broken down depending on the need. This may be why I noticed a benefit with the flaxseed oil and not the fish oil. Just something you may want to consider but I wouldn't advise giving both types of oil at once. I have a couple of 3 pound yorkies and they tolerate the flaxseed oil very well so I don't think your baby's size would be an issue. Best of luck. |

Has your vet ever done a skin scraping? Maybe I'm obsessed with the topic now, because my sister's pup has it, but the way you said "it started in small spots at first, but now is all over"... and "her hair is falling out... ALL of it!".... sounds like demodex. In many cases, the demodex begins as a "localized" case... which later turns to a "generalized" onset if the pup's immune system remains weak. Ive gone to two vets and they both have done skin scrapings. My regular vet mentioned mange and thats when he put her on the medicine shes on now; which works relatively well and once shes off it it comes back. My regular vet never tells me what he finds when he does stuff (including the scrapings) he just charges me an arm and a leg and says hes going to try a different medicine. Im thinking about going to a different vet but I dont want to do all this over again just to get back to where Im at now. |
I would find out if they have done a skin scraping specifically for MANGE. What about the rest of her health - is she pooing okay? What is she eating now? Have you checked btwn her toes/paw pads for any yeast growth? |
I just read the information on the demodectic mange and I couldnt believe it! It sounds EXACTLY like what she has! I just dont understand how my vet (who went to school for this stuff) doesnt realize what it is! He mentioned mange but I think it was a different kind. I brought her in and he never told me if she had it or not or if the medicine he was giving me was ment for mange. Im just so upset. She doesnt seem to be in any pain but I know if my skin was like that 24/7 I would be miserable! I wish she could just get better. |
She eats fine and everything. I can tell her immune system is down because at time her nails break easily. If she doesnt get a bath every week and if shes off the medicine for awhile it starts to get bad; then she gets tired and doesnt act like herself, then I give her a bath and stuff and she usually feels better. |
