cough/sneeze spasms? help! Pippa has been coughing some at night for the last little bit, and I had suspected she may have some symptoms of collapsed trachea. Anyway, tonight she is having what seems like coughing spasms. It almost looks like hiccups but she's coughing, almost like sneezing, and sometimes hacks like she's going to bring up a hairball. She's pacing around and licking around her nose and mouth and can't stop coughing. Her gums look pink, so I think she's moving air ok. I gave her some Robitussin about 10 minutes ago. I don't know what else to do. Also, we have tried rubbing her neck gently, but she doesn't really want us to touch her. Any suggestions??? |
I don't have any suggestions, but I hope she gets better real soon! |
it isnt necessarly collapsed trachea, could be kennel cough or "doggie flu" which will have many of the same symptoms... I would take her to the vet have her checked... |

heyy this is her daughter (wendy on here luvpippalu) saying that pippa is doing fine right now, still coughing some, but wayy better then before. :) |
unfortunately, Wendy is the optimist in our family. We are going to try and get throught the night if she doesn't get worse. If it keeps up, her vet is open in the morning. The good thing is, my son just came home from work and she greeted him happily. She's not lethargic, I gave her Nutrical just a little while ago too, because she hasn't eaten well today. During her diarrhea illness, I fed her rice and hamburger, so I thought she wasn't eating good because she was spoiled on people food. hmmmm, I will update tomorrow. |
sounds like your little gal has gone through some changes within a very short time including diet change....to be safe consult a vet and try to keep her diet consistant for a bit. I use for slight cough a tsp of brandy, tsp or honey just like when we (or some of us) were kids:) |
I think is best to take her to the vet if she doesnt improved. I hope she gets better soon. Please keep us posted. |
ok, Miss Pippa seems to be feeling better this morning. She stopped the coughing around 1:00 a.m. This morning she actually ate her dog food good, I think she finally got hungry enough. I called the vet's office to see what time they open this morning, and wouldn't you know, he's out of town for a conference this weekend. He has a solo practice. My daughter's best friend is a vet tech at another vet clinic, and she told me they would see her this morning if we want. I haven't decided yet...she seems better. This is crazy because I'm a pediatric nurse and I talk to mom's all day about their babies, and I know just what to do for skin babies....why can't I figure out what to do with my fur baby? I would probably tell a mom if the baby seems better to watch them and if things worsen to come see the doctor-I guess I'll take my own advice. Gives me a little more empathy for those mommas! :-) |

I have been having this exact problem with chloe. Does it almost sounf like a honking noise? I think you will have to go to the vet to know for sure what it is. It more than likely willl keep reaccuring. |
vaccines dont guard against kennel cough completely, the guard against one or two of the certain viruses that cause it (but there aer MANY more viruses that cause it then what the vaccine guards against)... if she had kennel cough in the first place (which is basically a doggy flue) it wouldnt have gone away this quickly, kennel cough (even after the antibiotics) can last for months............ i hope she stays better though maybe she just had a cold |
ok. I was JUST about to post almost the same thing. Maggie has had all the same symptoms.. the cough/gagging and she licks her face too! It's not all the time, but she has little spells. This morning it was particularly bad and I got really really nervous. Please let me know if you find anything out.. if this happens one more time I'm taking her to my vet. I might even call him today... |
Hey everyone. Maggie just got back from the vet. He told me she is VERY healthy and I shouldn't worry. He basically told me what I already know about their tracheas being shaped a little differently, so this will happen from time to time. She has no infection, but he's glad i came in just incase :) Oh and by the way- He told me he's one of the prettiest Yorkies he's ever seen! As you all probably know, I bought Maggie at a petstore because i fell in love, even though I'm so against Pet strores. The first vet she went to researched the breeder and said he heard so many great things about him... so i was extra happy. THIS vet (my usual one) was completely shocked that I had bought her at a pet store. He thought that I went to a "high-end" breeder and got her because she has such a great look and disposition. haha- not that i'm tooting my own horn, but isn't it so nice to hear things like this!? It definitely put me in a great mood to hear how beautiful Maggie is from a professional :D |
