Rabies and Parvo shot given today...a little worried
 

Hi, I'm a new Yorkie owner and I might be overly concerned. But after reading some of the posts tonight, I'm a little worried about my new baby. He is 15 weeks old and was given a Parvo and Rabies shot today as well as dewormer. He was his normal self for awhile but about after an hour, he threw up. He continued to semi-purge. I could see something was coming up and then he would swallow it down. He took a nap for a couple of hours and again returned to his normal self, playful as ever...and then he threw up again. He had a few fits of what I think is reverse sneezing. These fits have happened about once a week since I had him, but never more than once a day. Now he's been resting for four hours. He seems okay but I usually can't get him to bed before midnight! (So far he's slept from 7:30 to 11:30pm) I'm worried about the shots. It seems most posts I've read say that rabies shouldn't be given until 6 months, he's 3 months. And then that multiple shots shouldn't be given together. I figure I'll wait it out until the morning. But is it time for me to find a new vet?? Any thoughts on the vet's practices or my puppies condition would be appreciated.

I am so sorry that they gave your baby so many things all at once. I don't understand that. Yes, if it was me. I would be searching for a new vet. There are a lot of people here who know a LOT more than I do.. and they will be able to help you. Please keep and eye on your baby.

Typically the rabies shot is not given until at least 4 months of age. I am thinking the vet pushed it with your little puppy.... At 15 weeks he should have recieved the parvo shot, distemper, and one other one...
Rabies should have only been give without any others. :eek: I have seen many members reccomend not giving the rabies until a little older..:aimeeyork
I am sorry your little guy has been vomiting. It sounds like he has had a reaction. Keep an eye on him, and if he is still unwell by tomorrow, call the vet. AND look for a new one! :aimeeyork

First off.. a parvo can be given.. but rabies.. way too young.. should be at least 4 months and a good vet would not do double needles at once.. mine will let me pay for the last parvo and then rablies but I go back two weeks later for the rabies.. it is too hard on their tiny systems..anne

In some states the rabies has to be given at four months.
I wouldn't be happy that it was given at three but no vet is perfect.
If you like your vet otherwise, maybe just talk to them about this?
If you don't like them, it's time to find a new one.

What color are your puppy's gums? Pink or pale?

Some vets like to push shots and get it over. Others aren't up on the smaller dogs and seem to forget how they are so different. I like my vet and I just told him that my dog is too small to get but one shot at a time. We then will wait a wk or 2 and then get the next one. I have had good luck with that and the vet respects my wishes. If you like your vet talk to him and see if he will do as you wish. If he doesn't then I would get a new vet. Make sure you take your little furball back if he is still sick and see what they say.

Hmm… 15 weeks and a rabies shot. That does seem early to give a rabies. The earliest I've seen it given 4 months and that was for larger dogs. But what's done is done.
I would definetly stop by the vets office and express your concerns even if he isn't showing signs anymore to let him know what reactions he is having, and to see how long you may need to worry.

Thanks for all of the responses! I'm happy to report that my little one was back to normal after about 12 hours of rest. If my vet can be trusted, we are not due for anymore shots for a year...but in that time I plan to do some thorough research and find a more suitable veternarian. Would've done it sooner but my little Orion was an inpulse purchase, even though I've wanted a Yorkie for years I never thought I'd be willing to spend the money to get one! To answer some of the questions, Orion weighs in at 2.6 lbs and his gums are pink. I'm so glad to be part of such a great community!

I too had an issue with my new yorkie reacting to vaccinations. Being an ER nurse I thought she was either head injuried, hypoglycemic (which I treated anyway) or had some type of neuro event. I came home after working 12 hours, my 17 yr old son was with her, and she was very lethargic, had difficulty walking and holding her head up. When she did get her head to rise it looked like she had Parkinson's she shook so much. She had received her DHPP and bortadella vaccines the day before! Needles to say we ended up in the emergency vet only to rule out a few things. The next morning, after being up with her every few hours to make sure she ate, she seemed normal. However that night she again was rather lethargic but not to the degree as before. I was really freaked out....all the ER nursing rationale went out the window. From now on I will pretreat with Benadryl before vaccinations and only allow one at a time. She is due again in 2 weeks....thankfully she had fully recovered.

Vets are very busy people. I take in articles all the time to the vet regarding shots,(we spread our rabies over several years way before our vet said we should) etc. Our breeder led the fight to stop the rabies every year. Get thee to the study and research area on dogs so that you can keep your vet on his/her toes. Like our own human doctors they are trying to make a living and your job is to stand up and let them know what your dog needs. It really makes sense to locate a vet that specializes in small breeds if you are in a large city. (unfortunately we are not so that is why I try to keep up with good information.) Don't be afraid to challenge your vet on stuff. When we went to single shots across several days our old vet sort of rolled his eyes.. Trials on medications are often with bigger dogs(as so with people) so you have to judge. Glad things are better now.

I stood up to my vet, and he did listen . I am thankful that I would not let them overdue Suzi's vaccines, yet they can be convincing. After all they are the doctors with degrees. However, once they see you have done the research and care about what happens to your dog, they are much more inclined to cooperate. :aimeeyork
