Hello Everyone,

I am new here. I am looking for some suggestions, my 10 year old Yorkie, Cocomo, had an allergic reaction to his rabie shot and/or heartworm chewable medication. The vet is not sure which. I took him to the emergency vet who gave him the shots in the fanny and medication to reduce his fever. Cocomo is on liquid antibiotic for atleast a week. Now, he is experiencing frequent diaria (spelling). I phoned the vet's office they said to keep him on the medication. Any suggestions on helping my pup and handling the mess?

oh poor sweet man. Dogs are like humans.. when they are on medication it kills all the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria... so you need to get good bacteria back in him. You need to go buy pro-biotic yogurt (Something like Activa- preferably "plain"). I give it to Layla twice a day- morning and night... and i suggest you do the same for him.. it will REALLY help his belly. Also you can try PLAIN (NOT spiced) PURE pumpkin which will clear up the diarrhea right away!!!

What are you using for heartworm? Also next time you take him for a rabies vaccine... ask that you stay for at least 15-20 min to make sure he doens't have a reaction... and at his age... i would even say he doens't need that vaccine.. ask to have a titer test done to see if he even needs it. I hope he feels better soon. nothing worse tahn seeing your baby sick!


another question.. what WAS the reaction? what made you take him to the vet?

I would keep it on the meds and if you don't see any improvment..get another Vet to see you..2nd opinion not gonna hurt..Pepto will help with loose stool with Tylan in it...that is what the Vets use in our area

Thank you for your quick response. As far as the reaction, I have been unemployed until a month and half ago AND my vet office closed so...long story short I took him to a local pet store where the vets come in and provide "packages at reasonable prices" - for me, it was a bad decision. Within 24 hours Cocomo became lethargic, loss of appetite and in general he was not himself (in the extreme). He would stop and just stare and not budge a muscle. He would barely drink water too. I took him to an emergency vet who said, "his shots may have been given via a "dirty needle" and he was not sure whether or not the severe reaction was to rabies or heartworm medication. So, he gave him Cephalexin, Anti-allergy injection and an antibiotic injection.

sounds like a DEFINITE reaction to the vaccine.. ah well. .live and learn.. you were very lucky you got him there in time. I would be reluctatnt to give him rabies again... dogs dont' need it yearly and if he has had it yearly for 10 years... i am completely confident he could go without it and i'm sure many on here would agree.

PS. I was using Heartgaurd - have you used that before? Also, how much yogurt and how much Pepto do you give your dogs? Cocomo is 7 pounds...what do you suggest?

Yes, I agree. At this point I really do not want him to have Rabie Shots any more!

The yorgurt.. you can't give him too much... i buy those little ones.. and give Layla half.. esp since he is on meds the more the better.. just make sure since he has a senstive tummy right now taht you start slow and make sure it deons't bother him

I pm'd you about the Pepto.. did you get it?

also.. i would switch to a heart worm med that is given on the skin.. not orally... i haven't heard good things about Heartguard.

no problem. Ok look at the top of your screen.. it says Yorkie talk... then there is an add... then there is a long skinny box that says Yorkie talk... some other stuff... look to the right hand side of that long skinny box.. it says.. Welcoome hajashv then below it is says Private Messages and it should say :unread 1

click on Private Message. then you will see a message from me.. and click on it to read it!

Yes, I did. You must have the patience of a Saint! lol I have to figure this picture thing out...I see all the other adorable pups! I just never took the time, before now, to get involved in any forums! Now, I see what I have missed...

watch out... you'll be hooked :p Yorkie talk is VERY addicting :) But it's a great place!

If you have pictures on your computer already... when you go to post a reply there is a button that looks like a paperclip, next to the smiley face... click on that... click on the browse button and find where your picture is and then attach it...!!!

So, I am learning that this is a great place with great people and pups! Perhaps, when my lil guy is better I will have time to pump up our profile with pics and what not. I must admit (with a bit of predjudice) he is a cutie-pie. I absolutely love him, as I am sure all the other Yorkie folk feel about their little companions. Well, I am off to the store to get pet supplies and yogurt! It was really nice meeting you (and everyone). I will check in later.
