similar problems anyone? a week ago from saturday Chicago started coughing and then gagging at the end of each cough. After that the coughing stopped but you could here gurgling in his throat or nose. So wednesday we took him to the vet. They said everything sounded great and he wouldnt do anything in front of the vet (of course) she said his throat was fine. She said if anything it was prob a respitory infection or allergies.. she gave cago amoxicillan, and a antihystmine. well saturday he started coughing again all night. I was up all night. so i called the emergency vet at 5:00 am sun morning and the vet heard the coughing through the phone. I took him in at 7:30 am. A diff vet lady( same vet hospital) checked him and she said his heart was great, his lungs and throat were great. Once again she said she thought it was respitory or allergies but that his cough was too bad for him. So she put him on a diff antibiotic, gave him cough syrup for only when he coughed. well i have been up every night since saturday with only about 2 or 3 hours of sleep. it doesnt even seem like its getting better and seems way worse at night. Im soooo frustrated and i have no clue what to do. any advice or anyone go through the same thing? ohhh they said he was prob gagging at the end because after coughing it probably felt like something was tickling his throat. |

Hi, I have one that started doing the same thing. But it doesn't last very long... and it is nothing as severe as your little one. He started doing it a couple of weeks ago.. I thought it was the dust from putting in a concrete patio. It is only once in awhile.. and like I said... it doesn't last long. I called the vet and she agreed it was probably from the construction. If it continues... I am to call her back and get him in. I sure hope your little one gets better and you are able to get some sleep. |
The only time any of my dogs have had a cough it ended up being Bronchitis and he had to be nebulized twice and then it got better. |
My Tenci started doing the same thing Sunday night. I took her to the vet on Monday he said that it was Tracheal Bronchitis. She got shots, antibotics, and cough meds. She is acting better today, and I have not heard the cough since Tuesday evening. |

When I got my puppy he was doing that coughing thing too, but my vet said it was an upper respirtory infection and gave me amoxicillan at first but when that didn't clear it up he gave me a stronger antibiotic, can't remember the name now but have the bottle at home(at work now) started with a b but he had to take 2 rounds of that antibiotic until it cleared up. So he was actually coughing for about a month but it did finally clear up. |
OMG! Bella does the EXACT same thing!!! My vet also said everything checked out fine! I am going to take her back and ask about tracheal bronchitis!! Thank you so much for this post!! |
Did your little guy have a fever? I was just curious? Because they gave him antibiotics and that is for something bacterial. However, if this is a virus it will not have any affect . My Suzi use to have a cough that sounded likt she was choking. She does not hardly do that anymore, and it cleared up on its own. When he is have a coughing spell, rub his throat. This will sooth it, and maybe help . :aimeeyork If he still is not feeling better I'd defiantely talk to the vet again. :aimeeyork |
Tenci was running a slight fever on Monday morning when I took her to the vet, but on Tuesday it was back to normal. |
I have Cali she is 7 mos and she will do that once in awhile when the air is damp outside. But she will stop when you rub her chest area. Not sure if that helps or not but she stops. |
Have you brought anything new into the house? New clothes? blanket? cushions? carpet? cleaners? If it's allergies, you need to find the allergen that is causing these problems and eliminate it. When Miko had problems with this awhile back, we literally washed walls trying to eliminate whatever could have been causing the problem. We keep a very clean house, but something was causing the problems..We found out he was allergic to a new blanket we had purchased and another problem with the vents. As soon as we eliminated the allergens, he got better pretty quickly. |
Maybe try a different vet after the antibiotics prescribed are done? (if the condition does not get better) |
