My little guy isn't acting right. Any advice? I noticed that about two hours ago, my little Ringo started to act sick. He's shaking and can't walk straight. When he walks around it's like he's drunk. That's even if he walks at all. His nose is cold and wet, and he's completely unenthusiastic. This is very unusual behavior for him because he's very hyper. Just to test and see if he was really not feeling well, I took out the ferret, who he never fails to get excited about, and he isn't even mildly interested. Does anyone know what might be wrong? I'm worried that he might be getting a cold. |
Give him some nutrical immediatley if you don't have that give him karo syrup, pancake syrup anything with some sugar, it sounds like he is going hypoglycemic. Also get him to a vet asap. Keep us posted |

I will no repeat the same thing.. but want to see how you make out with your little one.. anne |
I didn't see you mention anything about him not eating so I'm guessing he ate something, if he did eat then he isn't going hypoglycemic, I had a scare with Gucci who is now my grandmothers dog, everytime she ate food she would act like that, she would wobble and act lethargic but after an hour or two of just laying around she would be back to her normal self, when I asked the vet how come she always did that when she ate food he said it might be a liver shunt and did a bile test on her, her bile number at the time was a little high but not high enough to diagnose a liver shunt, instead he changed her diet, I was giving her little ceasars at the time to fatten her up she was extra tiny after fighting a parasite infection (I got Gucci from a friend who's coworker didn't want her and was going to drop her off at the dog pound). Anyway the vet changed her diet and she has been fine ever since, she is 4 years old now, that was like 3 years ago that we had that scare with her. |
That is how Callie was acting, exactly, right before I took her to the vet this afternoon. Call the vet. After my vet did labs she concluded she ate something she shouldnt have. I hope your baby is ok! |
He kept.. eh hem. Farting and his stomach is gurgling. He eats organic dog food, but as far as I know, he hasn't gotten into anything. He does have a habit of eating paper, though, so he might be constipated. Let him lick a little Pepto off of a spoon and fed him some maple syrup. I'm going to watch him for the next hour or so and see what happens. I hope he's okay. :[ i really hope he didn't eat a pill or anything. It scares me because he's less than 3lbs, so I don't want him to overdose on anything. |

Lola has been in a similar situation. Her tummy was gurgling and she was "farty"...when she never usually is. She was tired and didn't want to be cuddled...so we immediately knew something was wrong! We gave her nutracal and got her to drink some pedialyte. Sounds like your baby needs the same! |
He's calmed down a bit since the Pepto. Hopefully, he'll calm down even more. We have a vet, but not an emergency one, and even if we did, going would totally overdraft my bank account since Verizon decided to send me a $340 bill this month instead of a $120 one like they usually do. He is sleeping right now,and I'm watching him. |
I hope Ringo is OK. Have you had him tested for a Liver Shunt? I always think it's that only because Teddi had one and she started acting weird just one day and that's what it turned out to be. Hope is is back to normal soon! |
Did you try any nutracal or syrup??? I don't think it could hurt. If it is low blood sugar, you probably don't want him to sleep the night through without giving your baby some. I hope everything turns out ok!!! |
I just gave him maple syrup. I'm going to give him some more. |
If he is still doing it after giving him syrup I would take him to the emergency vet ASAP... Better safe than sorry |
How old is this yorkie? When he started walking like a drunk had he gone a long time without eating? or had he eaten recently? Please keep track of all these things as they are very important. If it happened after not eating for a long time, then it's likely to be hypoglycemia. If it happens awhile after eating, it could be liver problems. What organic dog food does he eat? |

If he had eaten about an hour or two before this episode, it may not be as easy as hypoglycemia. He will probably need to be tested for liver shunt if you don't think it was hypo. |
I hope your little one is feeling better , How is he doing now? Please keep us posted, thanks. :aimeeyork |
I took him to the emergency vet last night and they ran blood tests. His blood sugar was only 72 even after eating syrup, but they think that he got ahold of a pill as well, which could cause his blood sugar to go down. Right before I took him, he suddenly had a seizure. We rushed him there, and tey gave him saline to flush him out and muscle relaxers because he was rigid and twitching. They also gave us some special high calorie food and nutrical. He's home and doing alot better today, but he's really tired, and still acting a bit high. They said he'll be fine, but it was definately a scare. I can't imagine how he could have gotten ahold of a pill, I make sure that he doesn't have anything like that on the floor. It was so scary. |
Oh no, I am so sorry:eek: Glad Ringo is feeling better though. Keep a very close eye out on him. What type of pill could he have gotten into? These little guys are very clever when it comes to finding stuff. :aimeeyork I did drop a whole bottle of pills on the floor one night, and was down on my hands and knees picking all of them up. I thought i had em all, Yet suzi found one:eek:, I saw it stuck on her chin and was able to get it away from her! It was very scary:eek: :aimeeyork |
I think it was a cough and cold pill. I'm not sure. My boyfriend said one was missing, It would make sense that he would go after one, they have a sweet coating on them so that you can't take too many. People use them to get high, so that's what we think was wrong, because he was definately having hallucinations. It was so scary. I feel like an irresponsible parent. I mean, if I can't even take care of my doggy, how can I take care of another human? |
