OMG! Chewie ate hubby's cigarettes! What do I do? I was in the shower and my hubby had put his smokes down on the end table. I let Chewie out of his crate not knowing they were down there...hubby was outside. He came in and found Chewie noshing on the cigs and thinks he ate about 5-7. That was about 45min ago and he seems normal. Will he just puke them up himself or can we give him something to help it along. I'm freaking out  |
I would call your Vet asap.... |
Ditto!!! |
Oh my gosh you need to call the emergency vet asap. Please let us know what they say. How scary. |

first off call your vet! barbie ate a peice of niccorette (stop smoking gum) before and i had to give her FRESH peroxide to make her throw up that nicotine or she could have been over stimulated.. your vet will tell you how much and anything you might have tro do afterwards. barbie threw up A LOT right away and luckily was perfectly fine afterwards. |
Tobacco poisoning....very bad! Please see an emergency vet! I will keep your pup in my prayers... |
Oh my gosh..I hope Chewie is ok, My bf smokes:embarasse and I told him that he has to keep his cigarettes in a food container with a snap lid, and use one of those portable ash trays with a lock on. I will be praying for Chewie, you are probably at the emergency vet already but just in case this is what I found on the net about cigarettes. The toxic dose for nicotine in pets is 20-100 mg. A cigarette contains 9-30 mg of nicotine depending on the type of cigarette; while a cigarette butt contains about 25% of the nicotine of the original cigarette despite its deceptively small amount of tobacco. (Smoking seems to concentrate some of the nicotine in the tail end of the cigarette.) Cigars can contain up to 40 mg. Chewing tobacco carries 6-8 mg per gram while the gum is 2-4 mg per piece and patches 8.3-114 mg. Smoking a cigarette yields only 0.5-2 mg of nicotine but eating one is a different ballgame as all of the nicotine becomes available for absorption into the body. Some good news is that nicotine is not absorbed directly in the acid environment of the stomach; the nicotine must move past the stomach into the small intestine for absorption. One of the first things nicotine does in the body is stimulate the vomit center of the brain, thus inducing vomiting which may save the patient’s life if there is more cigarette material in the stomach. SYMPTOMS OF NICOTINE POISONING Signs begin as quickly as one hour post-ingestion. Symptoms include: * Tremors * Auditory and Visual Hallucinations * Excitement * Vomiting and Diarrhea * Twitching possibly progressing to Seizures * Racing heart rate but slow heart rate with small doses * High blood pressure but at higher doses there is a circulatory collapse Nicotine Poisoning in Pets |

I guess he lived up to his name.....I hope he's going to be ok !! |
Lots of good advise, please let us know how he's doing after you see the vet. Hope all goes well. |
I'll be praying your baby is OK!!! |
Oh gosh, I hope he'll be ok! We dont' smoke nor do we have any friends who smoke, so Max isn't around the cigarettes at all, but one of the gardeners smokes and I had to tell them they can't smoke in the back yard; Max has gotten ahold of the butts and eaten them....I know b/c he throws them up or poops them out:mad:. I think eating even one cigarette would be toxic:confused: |
I pray Chewie will be okay...please keep us updated when you can. |
I agree with everyone!! Get him to a vet. Even if you don't know for sure how much he ingested, better safe than sorry! The nicotine is NOT good for them. We'll be thinking of Chewie, hope everything turns out ok. Please let us know how he is doing |
Just wondering how Chewie is? I hope he is ok:animal-pa |
