Update on Sammy Well, we've made it through another night and he only had diarrhea once which is great! This morning was a little tough b/c I tried giving him all of his meds, but he kept spitting them up with white foam. I don't blame him at all b/c I'm sure they taste really bitter (pill form). He did keep down his flagyl which really seems to be helping with his stools. Every hour he's been eating cheerios, rice krispies, or pita bread. I have the pickiest dog ever! He's also drinking on his own and very upbeat! Today he's only had 2 bowel movements and the one was a little drop that was formed and the last one was a typical pancreatitis poo (yellow mucousy and loose). I'm not worried b/c he's eating and keeping it down so the doctors aren't worried about loose stools. As long as he's hydrated, we're good! He's begging for food and playing with a new little stuffed lamb we got him yesterday. Right now he's napping with my husband...very cute. We also took him outside to get fresh air and he peed on EVERYTHING and kicked his legs back to cover it up and then was chasing birds. I really think we're headed north on the road to recovery. In order to continue doing well, I'm going tonight and probably tomorrow to have fluids injected under his skin. Even though he's drinking on his own, the doctors say it's very important to keep them really hydrated to heal the pancreas. He doesn't drink during the night either so this will give us peace of mind and help him feel better with each day. Does anyone have any suggestions for dog foods after pancreatitis? I've tried the Royal Canine high fiber, low fat, but of course he doesn't like it. Any others that might be a success? Cereal and pita bread can only last so long! |
i don't know anything abotu pancreitis. What are the nutritional needs? you can always home cook if you are having a hard time finding a kibble. So glad he is doing better :) |
I am very glad Sammy is out of the woods. :aimeeyork I am not certain as to what to feed , however this is a good question to ask your vet when you bring him in for fluids. :aimeeyork |
Thank you :) He needs to be on a high fiber, low fat food. We have him on Royal Canine dry right now...it's prescription. Sometimes he'll eat it plain, other times we have to coax him by mixing with a baby carrot or little pieces of pita bread on each piece. I know...he's spoiled! Last night he had quite a few bowl movements, but they were all formed! None of that mucous or diarrhea. His belly was making so many gurgling sounds and at one point he was up at 2:30, 3:30 and 4 am having bowel movements. I think it's b/c his belly's trying to get used to the new food and all that fiber. Since there wasn't any diarrhea, I wasn't worried. It seems like during the day he won't poop, but then it all comes out at night. I'm not sure if we're going tonight for fluids again. I've been giving him 1tsp of water and pedialyte about every 1/2 hr to hr. He's so interested in food and he's being nosy and acting like himself. I just get soooooo worried about any difference in him. |
I got a night pooper too:D suzi is a organic dry kibble , By Nature. She is doing very well on her new food. Your little guy sounds adorable. :aimeeyork I am glad he is starting to feel better.:animal-pa The high fiber diet probably is what's making him go bm a lot. As long as it is normal then he should be ok. Your doing good by giving him the extra fluids all the time. :aimeeyork He needs that .:aimeeyork |
