Does anyone use Denosyl? I was reading about Denosyl, and found if you think the liver function has been compromised then this drug may help in improving the liver function. Has anyone used this product . when did you start it if you bought it for your animal. Would you always use this product under the direct adivse of your vet. |
Ellie takes Denosyl. Her liver function is in question. Since it is an over the counter supplement, you don't have to talk to your vet but the cheapest you are going to get it is about $225 for one year, so you might want to make sure that your vet thinks it will help. But to answer your question, I would feel comfortable giving it to my dog without a vet's supervision because there aren't really side effects except maybe GI upset, but it is always best to ask. |
Zeus has MVD and has been on denosyl since he was 10 months old. He is now 7 yo. It has been great for him. He feels really good and his bloodwork is good. Juliet |
My yorkie has liver problems and takes Denosyl...I feel that this is a very beneficial supplement to those who have compromised livers. It's basically SAMe for dogs... |
How old was Ellie when you started it? why did you start it? |
When we are talking about compromised livers what test are you thinking have to be out of whack before you would start it? Ammonia levels, ALKP, ALT, AMYL, CHOL, OR A BAT ? |

To answer your other question, we started Miko on Denosyl when he was an older puppy. He is now 4 yrs old. What is wrong with your baby? |
He had bloody diarrhea and vomitting Quote:
The vet saw him for 2 days after he was hospitalized and he drew blod for a BAT and it was extremely elevated. From input on this forum he may not have a problem and just a sick puppy who got sick within 1 1/2 weeks after getting his second vaccine. He is eating and energetic now. We are just giving him his last few doses of the antibiotics and his feces no longer appears to have old blood in it either. WE thought his first formed stool was darker in colorer with old blood in it? I need to take him for a check up soon. He is doing better right now. |
I had posted his abnomal labs on an other thread Quote:
See some of my old post for his abnormal blood test. I haven't called the vet for the BAt results, I do know the first and second one was high. |
This is only my opinion, but those liver values are very, very high, and the albumin was very low...I would most definitely have bloodwork re-done on this baby in about two weeks. Does she have any symptoms? Is she a picky eater? Hypoglycemic? Ever disoriented or lethargic? |
couldn't even stand up Quote:
This morning the puppy was wagging his tail and came to so excited. I picked him up and took him into the kitchen. I stood him on the counter he positioned his legs as if he was a tripod. He ate some of the food but only after I added puppy milk. He is now very picky eater. I can get him to eat royal canin grounded up and put with puppy pedigree or hills science diet and adding Activia. He loves Nutrical. He ate some and drank some water. I put him on the floor and he walked sideways. I was horrified. I held him and gave him more nutrical. Within 20 minutes he came out of it. I am not sure what is going on with him. He is on his last couple of doses of antibiotics. |
Our Chihuahua started losing weight and his hair was falling out. The blood work showed problems with his liver so we started him on Denosyl. It has really helped. The vet also recommended changing his food to chicken and rice that I make up in batches. He has regained the weight he lost - plus some and his hair is growing back. I found a great price on Denosyl from Amazon.com (30 tablets for $16.39). Well worth it to get Taco back to good health! |

Are you just feeding chicken and rice or are you adding supplements? |
Denosyl Right now just the chicken and rice. The vet will recheck him in a couple of weeks and we'll see where we go from there. He is also getting a medication to improve his circulation that is being compounded from a local pharmacy (A$60 a month). But as I said in my original post - he has done a complete turnaround. I was very afraid we were going to lose him when he first got sick. Exactly what is going on is still a little bit of a mystery, but we are going to keep going with the chicken and rice and the Denosyl. I'll let you know what the next round of lab tests shows. I'm praying and optimistic! :animal-pa:animal-pa |
