Coughing is scaring me... Chewie's in his bed, trying to go to sleep for the night, but he keeps coughing. It sounds like he's trying to hack something up or it reminds me when my allergies are acting up and my throat is dry. A couple coughs then he stops, then a few minutes later he starts again. It's been going on for a little over an hour. The weather has been very dry here (North Texas) so I wonder if the dry atmosphere is drying out his throat. He doesnt have anything stuck in there that I can see... Anyone have any suggestions? |
If he is still doing it, take him to the vet. |
I would take him to the vet also. Nolee did this and he had an irritated throat according to the vet. It is better to have him check by the vet. Best of Luck!:) |
Might be could be kennel cough...does the baby go to the groomer or other places with dogs? Bordetella is transmitted through the air and sounds like the dry hacking cough you mentioned... check with the vet...kennel cough is not life threatening (like our common cold) but your vet can tell you for sure.... roxanne |
Frimousse was coughing very hard . I went to the vet , she told me she didn't like what she heard so I had to let her at the hospital . Now , I am waiting for them to call and go pick Frimousse up . Vet said coughing is not always a sign of kennel cough . |
My yorkie was doing that awhile back...He was hacking at night and he would cough up white foamy, phlegmy stuff. I took him to the vet and determined that it was allergies. My hubby and I took out the new blanket that we had bought and washed it several times in hot water in dye-free, perfume-free detergent and then washed walls and cleaned inside the A/C vents...The hacking went away that night... The vet did prescribe cough expectorant and a bronchial dilator though. We didn't need to give it to him though because we found and eliminated the allergen that was causing his problems... Aside from allergies, it could be an upper respiratory infection/kennel cough. Both of these typically happen at night. |
How is he doing now? :aimeeyork |
The vet thinks its allergies as well. More-so because he only seems to be hacking/honking after he's been asleep. So we're changing up the detergents and he also suggested to keep a humidifier with menthol in the water near his bed area to keep his airways from drying out so much. Here in Texas the weather has been so hot and dry lately which is most likely the contributor. He has never been to a groomer (we do that at home) or around any other dogs so kennel cough was ruled out. Plus he just got his bordatella oral and regular injection a month ago. I noticed me and my hubby have been sneezing and coughing more lately too so I'm just placing the blame on the lovely Texas summer weather :p |

The best thing to do is get to the vet and maybe run more tests if it continues. The emergency vet heard him cough and happened to see him spit up. They immediately knew and saved me the cost of a blood test. The meds have done wonders and while he has a lingering cough, it is 150% better. He went from coughing every 3 minutes to maybe once or twice every few hours. The emergency vet sent the records to my regular vet who has called me three times since just to be sure he is on the mend. Have things improved since going to the vet? While the idea of kennel cough scared me, I feel much better after talking to both the emergency vet and my regular vet. |
