what to do if yorkie starts to seizure.... i was thinking and i realized i have no idea what to do if my baby were to have a seizure. what is the first thing the vet does, what can i do? any advice would be helpful and good for eveyone to know in the case of an emergency! thanks in advance!!! |
I'm going to "bump" this because as many posts as I've been seeing about Yorkies having seizures, I wouldn't mind knowing, too. |
hold ice on their back and love them. if it hasnt happened before call your vet. i wrote down time started and ended. |
Why ice ? If you dont mind explaining. |
I know when Maya, my Pom had a grand mal seizure a few months ago, I didn't know what to do besides scream. I thought she was dead. She slowly came around and then I took her to ther er vet where they really didn't do anything for her except check he neurological responses, which were delayed due to seizure. They did want to now how long it lasted and what happened during the seizure, like she howled at first fell over, was twitching and then went stiff and looked dead, I don't know what you can do for them, I would be afraid to move her during one. |
My poodle had seizures for years and she took medicine for them for years...when she had one my vet always told me that "they were harder on me than on her" but she scared me to death everytime she had one!! They always told me just to hold her real close and talk calm to her until it passed is about all you can do. It is scary when they have seizures but she did it for years and she lived to be 19!! |
I agree with the above. Try to make sure that your dog is safe and not going to hit itself on anything; I would hold them or at least, keep my hand on them if they're too big to pick up, just so they're not convulsing and hitting themselves on something (like the floor). And talk to them calmly and try to soothe them. I would definitely make notes on what was going on just prior to the episode, what it was like, and how long it lasted. And what your dog's demeanor was immediately following; was he weak, or unsteady, confused or disoriented? These are things that you'll forget the details of not long afterward, and if you keep a journal, it will not only help the vet if it's something that is becoming more frequent, but it will help you to know sort of what to expect so that you'll be a little calmer too. I try to keep pretty detailed notes whenever my dogs are ill with anything. It just sort of gives you a timeline of what's going on. Oh...I also always make sure they have a patent airway~ be careful about putting your fingers in their mouth though; you might get bitten! |
This link contains Excellent information regarding seizures and what to do....The information about putting an ice pack on their back is in there as well. It explains exactly where to place it. When Miko has had seizures, I've used the ice pack on him, and it helps shorten the length of the seizure. Please read the whole thing. Emergency Care For Canine Seizures - Epi Guardian Angels The part about valium is not pertinent to dogs who are seizuring due to liver shunt. Dogs with liver shunt who are seizuring are usually given a lactulose enema initially. If the seizures are continuous, then they use other methods to get the seizures to stop. If it happens often, they are typically put on potassium bromide. |
