anal gland question How do you know when they are empty when you express them? I followed the directions from another thread and I didn't know when to stop. His anus is swollen and he is having trouble pooping... I thought it was an anal gland issue. |

Oh gosh I would suggest maybe giving him a stool softner so he can go poop. It will also make the poop a bit softer so it doesn't further irritate the anal glands. I never express the glands. Zoey eats hard food so her poop is solid and the vet told me when they poop it will press on it and clean it out on it's own. Over cleaning can cause a host of problems with the anal glands. By the way if it's usually an anal gland issue you will see them scooting. So if he is constipated then that is being caused by something else. |

I changed to Canidae All Life Styles and haven't had problems with anal glands since. Their poops are solid enough to express on their own. Hope your furbaby is okay. |

I have to squeeze both my boys anal glands and Ive switched foods and I still have to do it. Their poop is deffinately firm enough. I only squeeze them like once every month. I know when to stop because once it oozes out,you can squeeze once or twice more and nothing comes out. That's when I stop so I dont hurt them. Im so used to it by now. People freak out if they see me doing this .To me its part of their grooming lol Genie |

I forgot to mention about your dog having trouble pooping. You may want to check with your vet cause if you oversqueeze the glands I've heard you can rupture them? I read in a thread somewhere that the anal glands can be surgically removed? Genie |
